Iran recently launched a long-range missile capable of reaching Israel and Europe. The Bush administration's reaction has been once again unfortunate yet predictable: saber-rattling with offers to deploy, to the benefit of our domestic military-industrial complex, a missile defense shield to meet this threat.
Everybody says that military might alone is not the answer, that diplomacy is also required. This is clearly underscored by the situation in Iraq.
America's policies in the Middle East are seen as imperialist, ill-conceived and biased toward Israel.
The Iranian missile test was said to be in response to Israel's threat of bombing the Iranian nuclear facility.
Russia is saber-rattling in response to the Bush administration's proposed missile defense shield in the Czech Republic and in Poland.
The administration has been so utterly inept in it's foreign policy that any suggestions from the administration should compel us to do the opposite.
Obama is talking about dialog with Iran. McCain is talking about a missile defense shield and joking about killing Iranians with cigarettes!
I think it is pretty clear. McCain seems more in-line with the Bush administration, more of the same as far as the Middle East is concerned. McCain has also expressed such disregard for the Iranian people, not differentiating between them and their leaders, as I hope other countries would differentiate between the American people and our current leaders.
We need a new paradigm in our foreign policy and that means electing Obama as the next president of this country.
We should engage diplomatically with Iran and turn down the volume of military threats.
We must find alternative energies and lessen our dependence on foreign oil, something we were warned about 30 years ago and have ignored because there was still money to be made by the petroleum industry.
The greedy are still wanting to squeeze consumers and the planet alike to keep the old paradigm afloat as evidenced by initiatives of off-shore drilling and in ANWAR and by not signing on to the Kyoto protocol. It won't hurt the environment at all, says the administration. Sure.
As for the missile defense shield, this will only serve to further enrich the military-industrial complex that President Eisenhower warned us about so long ago, will provide a false sense of security, will threaten those countries that have all ready had it up to here with us further destabilizing an incredibly destabilized part of the world.
I mention the false sense of security in the deployment of missile shields simply because such a system is easily overwhelmed with decoys that when exploded create more "targets" than can possibly be analyzed and dispositioned: is this blip of a radar reflection a missile or a decoy? If a missile, might it contain multiple warheads?
A missile defense will never be effective and will be a huge waste of taxpayer money, such as was the case with Reagan's Star Wars program.
We need to come back down to earth and deal with the world as it is, not with the ostrich-like head-in-the-desert sand approach that blinds us to everything other than a continuing search for oil.
I say we let Iran waste their money on developing what they will. Mutually-assured destruction (MAD) contained the nuclear threat once and should do so again. Effort should be made in securing the existing stockpiles of enriched uranium and preventing exports of related technologies into Iran. We should sheath our sabers.
In the meantime we should begin an information campaign to all the peoples of the Middle East explaining the dynamic of MAD and the scenario that would follow should Iran decide on a first strike. This may compel the good Iranian people to elect more moderate leaders with which we can enter into a constructive dialog.
We should be actively pursuing a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a sign of good faith to the Middle East people and governments.
A much greater threat exists in Pakistan, a country that already has nuclear weapons and a very unstable government, whose alliance and effort in the "war on terror" has been questionable at best. Here is where we should be paying attention, not on Iran and its oil.
We could better spend the money from developing and employing any missile defense shield to begin addressing much greater threats to the world such as the imminence of a world-wide flu pandemic, protecting our water and food resources as well as Pakistan's nuclear threat.
We do not have unlimited resources, unlimited military might, unlimited influence nor do we have much respect in the world to enable us to do things the same way as in the past.
Stupid is as stupid does, and it is time for a change!

As for the MIC spending and pandemics, I believe that it's going to take a pandemic or a complete economic collapse in order for us to reign in that monster. We'd managed to slightly tame the beast with the end of the cold war, but since the creation of their marvelous new "product," the "war on terror," we're destined to be spent to debt oblivion.
Thanks again for your excellent comments and astute perspective.
Iran actually launched nine missiles of various types, and among them are ones that can hit Israel and American bases in the region. Perhaps I misidentified them as long-range when they are in fact medium-range missiles. They are certainly not ICBMs.
I'm afraid you are correct concerning the MIC spending and the pandemics.
Ah, well, there are too many people on the planet anyway, and I'm finding it hard to get employment in this global economy.
Food prices should come down and it might be easier for me to find work building missile defense shields after millions are wiped off the world population rolls.
Provided I survive.
But the discussions these past few days have given me an insight that has escaped me thus far. The diverse problems we have are all connected by one thing, the need for greed.
I'm going to flesh these ideas out in the coming days, but the thrust of this article will be this:
The American electorate has been set upon by the money-makers. As they claim to represent us, they employ tactics that have resulted in an ultra-divisive political arena, a divide and conquer tactic.
So here we are, conservatives vilifying liberals, Democrats vilifying Republicans, and vice versa, when in reality we are puppets on a string and our real enemy is the puppeteer!
Thanks for your thoughts.
Kumbaya?
I knew that comment would get someone's attention! You passed the test!
One clarification, there was no God in Russia to die for, just the state, for which people were willing to die, and did. Not as martyrs of course, but as patriots. Or as victims of Stalin's purges. And indeed, that is another story.
I agree, Iran is not like the former USSR and I did not mean to suggest that they would respond in a similar way. I assume the "they" is the Iranian leadership.
Part of my proposed (off-the-cuff) strategy was to appeal to the Iranian people, not their leaders. I believe the Iranian people for the most part, are good and reasonable folks, who like most people are not hell-bent on their own destruction.
Priority-wise, I'd rather focus on Pakistan than Iran, but they don't have as much oil as Iran......
No, we should never give up, but that doesn't mean changing tactics that don't work.
We need foreign policy strategies that are not basically flawed in concept and really designed to bolster our domestic economy. Our foreign policy has become domestic policy.
I don't know if you've noticed, but much of the world is not influenced much by what we do, with the exception being desparate North Korea. Iran is not desparate.
And now we sing: "Kumbaya, my Lord, Kumbaya .... "
What's with this Kumbaya thing? What does "Kumbaya" mean, anyway?
Is it Sawahili for "testicular fortitude"? (inside joke - I'm pulling Winston's chain)
Thank you for your insights and sharing them with us here. You must have some very interesting stories to tell.
It is known to some degree that the Iranian people are good, decent folks who really have a fondness for America, or at least how they may perceive it. I think they do make a differentiation between our government and its people, as should we toward them.
Unfortunately, they live in a theocratic and oppressive regime and are understandably unwilling to fully express themselves.
One more example of why politics and religion should be kept separate. It never seems to be good for either.
but you aren't floating the mirrored warhead plan anymore, you know mirroring missiles so lasers would bounce off...after awhile even the opposition to SDI realized that was a weight/ballistics problem
basically, its far better to hope than to try top be able to defend...didn't we go through that for over 40 years?
I'm certainly no expert, but it is easy to conceive of a missile with multiple warheads deploying with half of them decoys and the other half active warheads.
Nothing made by man is impervious to subterfuge by man. This is a generalization of course, but I still think the most cost-effective and viable option is mutually assured destruction coupled with appeals to the populace of potentially effected areas in the way of leaflets, Internet, radio, etc.
The idea is to bring internal pressure to bear on rogue governments such as Iran, as well as using all the other diplomatic and strategic options available.
The saber-rattling of our government does not seem to be effective as a deterrent and seems to aggravate the instability in such regions as the Middle East.
We also need to put money toward securing the existing nuclear stockpiles and should focus on the very dangerous situation in Pakistan.
The Patriot missile defense system was effective in the Gulf War, but nuclear weapons are a different can of worms than conventional weapons.
Eisenhower warned us about the MIC; I think we should listen to the former four-star General and President.
I think an investment in a nuclear weapons program by any country today would weaken it rather than make it stronger.
I am interested in your ideas.
What would make a missile defense system 100% effective against multiple-warhead nuclear weapons?
What is the MTBF (mean-time between failures) for such a system?
How much would it really cost?
What can we afford now that our economy is in shambles and the national debt so high?
Does your computer ever crash?
Pakistan IS a very disturbing situation.
Iraq's Prime Minister wants a time line for our withdrawal.
GW Bush said he would leave, if asked.
Well, we have been asked, so what's the excuse now?
I am sure there will still be some excuse to stay!
It seems like we have accomplished everything we originally intended, and more.
Why, if we leave now, would it be considered we lost the war?
Because we have not secured the no-bid contracts for American oil companies to extract Iraqi oil at large profit margins?
Because we have not secured a contract with Iraq to allow permanent military bases?
Because we have not secured Iraq as a territory of the United States?
Were these the original reasons we were told as to why we were going to strike Iraq preemptively?
I think not!
I don't know if the administration thinks the electorate is stupid or more concerned with watching American Idol and such, but I think these days with the Internet providing such an array of information that things said remain for a long time, and that it is nio longer so easy to pull the wool over the eyes of the voters.
But then again, I dunno, Bush was elected twice. Perhaps if we shut down hate radio and Fox News we could have a chance at a reality-based political discourse and make better political choices for all Americans, no matter what party may win.
Thanks for commenting.
Can you give your reasons why you think we need a missile defense shield?
How much would it cost? Then triple that number for the inevitable cost-overruns.
How are we going to afford it? Did you know the country is broke? The dollar don't buy much these days.
We cannot afford these things in my opinion. Schools and public services are hurting, infrastructure is crumbling, social security needs are going to skyrocket and place big demands on the budget, even if we all were to work until we're 70 instead of 62!
What about the Star Wars program that Reagan started? How much was spent on that, and what did we get out of it? Not much, unless you were a military-industrial organization.
Our best defense is MAD, and education. Let some other country spend their wealth on a defense that would be insane to ever use.
I'm not sure that Star Wars will work in a real life test, and there is no reason to think that any system could be 100% effective.
But putting aside the need for a missile defense shield, I think our priorities should first and foremost be the people of this country. Let's get everybody fed and healthy and sheltered and employed, and then take up the question of such things as a missile defense shield.
A country that does not take care of its citizens is not worthy of being defended.
