"Alter Egos" on Gather--Who are your favorites?

November 18, 2008 02:36 PM EST (Updated: November 18, 2008 02:40 PM EST)
As many of us have speculated, there are more and more Gather members adopting "alter egos". They use them to post comments supporting their articles and also to leave nasty, insulting comments on other peoples' articles that they dislike. They hide behind their fake names and icons. I have been the target of many of them and have some ideas of who on Gather are using alters. How about you? Who do you think has adopted alters? Let's bring these people out of the closet, shall we?

LOL, I know of a couple...... one of them I like even, but this person isn't doing hateful stuff, just keeping others on their toes. The other one I am suspecting is one of those die hard Republicans, who can't deal with us. What I don't get about it is, why, isn't the internet anonymous anyway? Why would anyone need another alias. Oh yeah, to promote themselves....... or their cause.

It is the haters that hide behind their anonymity that get me, Rosa. The ones who would probably never have the nerve to say what they do here on Gather if they were eye-to-eye with someone.

Left a comment on another post about this...........I haven't been on Gather long enough to to know who the real posters might be but I am not so naive as to NOT notice who the worst abusers are.
I liked to call the 'Acorn' bunch.....the ALTER NUTS!
Before I go off all POSTAL back at one of those F-rightwing nuts I just think of the BUDWEISER commercials and go check their BORN on dates! Pretty obvious that someone who has been here only a few days or weeks yet seems to KNOW exactly what everyone else thinks or writes is a bat crap crazy loonytoon that is just trying to prop up their own opinions. I just yawn and think................I'm just a-moving on.................nuthin' to see or do there!
Ya know I was REALLY not a happy camper after COUP2K or after the B S re-play in 2004 and THAT is an UNDERstatement. We got soooo much crap and attitude dumped on us over their glorious 'W' and his band of robber barons won that it was both cruel and inhumane. No big surprise that that was then exactly how they ran our country!
What WAS it they told US to DO? Oh, I remember...."Just move ON" and "MOVE ON" we did......maybe they aren't as dumb as we think they are!

I often find that some posters use exactly the same writing patterns as others. I suspect that means they are alter egos... but have no proof.

It's interesting that the AEs are usually even more virulent and strident than the original poster.

Remember when we had all the variants of Suzy Articlewriters? I miss Fake Tom; he was hilarious. I don't know WHO has an alter ego and who doesn't, though I can guess about Opal and Otis! Plus Gus, the one eyed cat and Spike. That's about the extent of my knowledge.

Sue/mari fer sure, mari alter is certifiable.

As for Candace, years ago she was the nicest person you would meet here ,so maybe you are right she is an alter.

I'd rather believe that than to think she lost her mind.

Hmmm. The alters have come to visit you, just as you said, Carla. Yet, there are many, many, many that are not here.

I get a connection request nearly every day. I pass them by, and move on to the valid ones.

Interesting giveaway, Carla is that they actually DO bring out some of their freakish alters from years gone by, like 2006, and there are some that "come out" from 2007.

In other words, not all of them are "new hires". ROFL.

If you think I'm so good at this, it's because I've had so many knocking at my door. I've even a few who think that I do not know about them; I just one up on them . . .

A good, good friend [I blush] tells me what he does.

He accepts their connection requests, and places them in a category of

"Not them".

It is so they never get involved in anything that he shares with the people that he really likes, and interests him.

They get nothing.

However, he has a permanent list of the idiot alters, and is one up on them, as well as being able to . . .keep an eye on them.

Some alters are fun and I really don't mind, but then there are those that just get a perverse pleasure out of running around Gather pretending to be something they are not and stirring up trouble as they go.

I don't have the time or energy to deal with attention seeking alters or create alters of my own-- I do have a real life that I genuinely enjoy living.

Recently, Carla, I saw a post where someone claimed I am you! Can you imagine? Of course, people think I'm half the people here. If the reason people have alters is because they want to say nasty things, I'm surprised I'm so accused because I think most would agree that I am as nasty as can be with my own name and have no compunction when I think it's called for, though I don't use profanity or wish bodily harm to people. that's just not my thing.

Folks, let's get this straight. "Schizophrenia" has nothing to do with Multiple Personality Disorder. At one time MPD was called "Schizoid Syndrome." I think that's the source of the confusion.

Multiple gather identities may be a symptom of Multiple Personality Disorder, not schizophrenia.

You know, Don S./Tony S, I just saw Mari for the first time when I was following Lera's comments to see how she was being stalked by someone here. How you can think I am she is really funny, since her writing style and her expression is entirely different from mine, but now that I think of it, I think it was you who also claimed that I am Carla's alter.

I would assume, AC W. that this is your nom de plume. An alter on gather is someone who spins off as a different person/personality to leave messages under a different name/identity. But you could be both. Are you AC W. the alter of another person on gather? Care to confess?

The official reason that this site's administration gave for allowing alternate identities was purposes of medical discussions. There were medical experts registered here, and members were encouraged to consult them about a host of symptoms, illnesses, syndromes, and ailments... none of which was going to happen if people still had any shred of self-respect or sense of privacy. Thus, alter-egos, such as this one, became legal... not that I've gone seeking a cure for death here.

We are not permitted to abuse, threaten, attack, or malign others here; basically, alternate identities are subject to the same TOS as anyone registered under a real name or an original identity.

I am a watered-down version of my namesake, necessarily, but my main purpose is the creative challenge of speaking in an authentic voice.

Carla,

I don't have it all figured out. However, I must be "ouching" someone. Right after the discussion on this thread with you last night, another one popped up on one of my articles.

I'll send you an email. We mustn't let them think we are smarter than they.

Amelia Earhart,

You provided some very valuable information, and I thank you for it. But Gather also clarified that it is okay to use alters for satire, such as the Subaheim-Wurbizers, or Otis and Opal.

There is no intention to deceive or mislead there -- it is just for fun. What I take exception to are those alters who pretend to be actual people, such as . . .say, a (pulling a random name) Sally B. Smith, with a full profile, and then proceeding to fool a community when they are really another person here on Gather, not desirous to reveal that identity's true feelings on a particular issue, because they don't want their true feelings associated with the REAL THEM.

In other words, they want to "express themself", while keeping their original identity pristine. That is one reason for these alters, although there are others.

Carla,

"An alter on gather is someone who spins off as a different person/personality to leave messages under a different name/identity."

Sorry, I misunderstood. I just assumed it was someone using a fake identity. My apologies.

Oh, to re-thread this, how about the guy who plays "Lois Lane" and the other one who displays his feminine side by calling himself "Randee"? Has ANYONE ever been fooled by that pair of slackjaws?

And, Lady Neetah, thank you -- I had noticed there were other exceptions to the rule, though I thought the reason the TOS changed so as to allow alter-egos at the time when medical questions were being fielded.

Alternate identities existed long before then, and for a while there was a policy of deleting them, if not preventing them via IP tagging... though rumor had it that this policy was unevenly administered.

My thoughts on the matter, predictably, are that anyone posting to an internet site is going to employ some layer of deceit, either actively, for self-protection (which makes good sense) or passively, through self-deception, just as in reality. In presenting ourselves we choose what we reveal, just as we choose what clothing to wear before leaving the house. The issue is really in the motivation.

Amelia, it is those alters that hide behind their anonymity to be insulting and leave hateful messages and profanity in their comments that are the problem. Personally, I never understood the need to use a false name. If you use your first name and an initial people aren't going to be able to track you down. Especially if you have nothing in your profile about location. I have always used my picture and first name and have no problem with that.

Thanks everyone who answered my question.
And, I even went to Kevin to help me answer it also.
Kevin said, that you can have more than one account, but, you have to use a different email address. And, you can't use the account to get points for the original account. You have to use that separate account in accordance with the TOS.

AC W, so you think Lois is hysterical, huh? Those "pearls of wisdom" that she throws out? I have to disagree. She can be pretty nasty and really doesn't leave much in the way of wisdom that I have noticed.

She's never left any nasty comments on my posts; just funny joke-type stuff. And no, I'm not Lois Lane.

Carla,

These people are cowards. It is the whole purpose behind the the alters -- to hide.

The Internet is one of the best havens in the world to do just that -- HIDE.

Just to illustrate the point,

most of my working career has involved some sort of involvement with the public -- either over the phone, or face-to-face.

While over the phone, I was restricted in what I was able to say and/or do, while the public, aka the consumer was really able to be quite abusive, but again, only to a certain extent. Experience taught me how to CONTROL them. Oh, they were so "authoritative", and so "commanding", big bad people who did a good deal of big bad talk . . .that is, over the phone. What they did not know was, because of their "big bad talk", there were occasions when I used MY authority to make them come into the office when it was not really necessary. Why? Well, they were so big and so bad, I wanted to MEET THEM.

Guess what happened when I got to meet "Mr." or "Ms." Big Bad Talker. Wimps. Every time, the rhetoric of being big and bad was gone and there they were -- little scaredy cats, not at all what you would have expected by the conversations had over the phone. In my mind, I was thinking,

"Please, please, give me a reason!"

But no. Just the nicest, politest people that you would ever want to meet. It's the same thing here. These people with these alters are mere cowards, that's what.

It was the same way with my co-workers. Carla, we knew. We all knew, that the only reason for the "big, bad" talk, was because they "couldn't get it up" in the real world.

Now, the ones that I would be concerned with, are the ones who -- as the saying goes -- speak softly, and carry the big stick, like Barack Obama. Notice how he did not initiate the smear campaigns, but said if attacked, that he would defend himself? Those are the ones to watch out for, in terms of bravery and courage. The others? They're just itty bitty scaredy cats who have found a medium where they may stick their chests out, probably for the first time in their lives.

I just heard of a case that is in court where a mother impersonated another person on the internet (a boy she made up and named Josh Evans) to harrass another teen girl at her daughter's school. The woman developed a relationship with the girl online impersonating this nonexistent boy. She then turned around and told the girl that "The world would be a better place if you were not in it." The teenaged girl then hung herself. This mother now faces the possibility of spending 20 years in prison.

Sorry suzy but as with most of your statements you are wrong.

Telling a lie over and over doesn't make it true sweety.
Why would I indicate your hateful self could be Carla?

And as far as me being Tony s ,well that assumption is just plain stupid.

Now as for your alter mari, you really should take your meds for your multi-personality disorder.
