CNN reports today an 83 year old man living in a big Condo Complex in South Florida has been told he can no longer ride his Segway around the complex. One destination is to visit his girlfriend.

Other devices like motorized wheelchair/scooters are allowed. The Condo Association says it is a safety issue.

Should the man be able to keep and use his Segway?

Vote yes or no or pontificate.

I would say that if his doctor says he should use it because of his age and any medical problems that he has then yes he should be able to use it. Otherwise no he has to abide by the same rules ans anyone else.

Hmmmm . . . toughy. I'd say yes, if he has medical reasons to use it (not just age b/c I know a lot of old folks that can do some amazing things). If he's just plain lazy, then no because he could use the exercise!

Plus, I'd rate "no" overall b/c Segways are pretty lame.

Yes, he should be able to ride it as long as he is not causing a traffic hazard or riding it on people's lawns.

Yes he should be able to. As long as he is not running over people. Besides if he walked to his girlfriends he might be too tired to perform after that. So yes, he should ride his Segway to his friends house.

He should ask his doctor for a note. In most places the law will back up medical reasons.

Was it Segways, in general, banned, or was it just this man, and his segway, because of noted radical wrecless driving?

If it was Segways, in general, than what was it about Segways the association found to be more hazardous than motorized wheelchairs?

Not knowing much about Segways, I think they are not as safe as a motorized wheelchair or cart....something that one is sitting in. So, I'm going to go against the gen pop here and vote

If he was driving recklessly, then he should not be able to drive it around, however since motorized scooters and wheelchairs are available they should make really sure that they specify what is allowed and what is not.

The way the above article is written, it sounds as though the management just doesn't like him going around to his girlfriend's house and using mobile transportation to get there. Just because you are using a motorized scooter does not necessarily mean you can't walk. I personally hate Segways, but if someone else wants to look like a fool, more power to them.

I would say yes, he should be able to use the Segway, however, if I remember the news article, he was using it on the sidewalks and not yielding to the pedestrians on the sidewalk. I think he should be made to use it on the roadway--much like bicycles do.

Yes, he should. But maybe we aren't hearing the whole story. Maybe he doesn't have good control or good reflexes. It could be dangerous.

I think he should be able to ride it as long as the complex does not have a policy against them. The owners of the property might be concerned about liability suits. If there is no policy forbidding the use of Segways, and the man's doctor certifies his ability, he should be able to ride it.
If he's able to control the thing and not run over anyone or hurt himself, let him ride!

According to federal law and the American Disabilities Act as well as Elder Law in most states, yes he can use it and the Condo Complex can be sued for this for discrimination against the elderly and the infirm. They have to follow the law like everyone else. Their rules have to abide by federal and state laws. They don't. So yes he can use it. There is always someone who is out to create problems and intimidate others even when they know it is illegal. The man has a lawsuit if he wants to pursue it.
