I have to admit. Mine is pure funk. Yes, I'd love to say it's all the wonderful things that my friend, Miz Cecile describes. She says shabby chic and a few other nice names. Well, it's shabby chic somewhat. In fact, I enjoy using what I have or what I find in antique or thrift stores. I like to make things out of found objects! In my whole entire life, I've only purchased six pieces of new furniture. My leopard chair and ottoman came from a store we have here in Santa Barbara called The Z Gallery. I also purchased a black chaise. The shape blended in with our baby Grand. That's the furniture. Oh yes, two new mattresses and a new couch. Everything else was found at garage sales or made by my husband. The house has the same stove that has cooked food in this house since the 50's. That's at this house in Santa Barbara. Of course, we have tons of books and furballs hanging around!
We are lucky to have another little house in Eureka, Nevada. That house came with everything. The only piece of furniture that I did purchase was a leopard shoe chair. Of course, I purchased a new mattress and sofa pillows and coverings. This fan was hanging in the ceiling looking mighty drab. It was brown and had these little glass bulb coverings. All that had to go. I painted it silver and hung some treasures on it. I actually love it. I also paint all the walls ultra pure white from Home Depot. That way I can change things around often.
Now, in a few days, I'll be going down to the bayous and will be working on mama's house down there. (hurricane damage) I'm not changing a thing from the way she left it. It's pure mama. Early accumulations of furniture and lots of artificial flowers. Everything was always clean and smelled good. When you walk into my mama's house, you can feel mama's spirit still there. I really can't see changing anything. Even my old bedroom is exactly the same as when I was in high school back in the sixties!
Thanks for dropping by. Please tell me about your house. I'm sure I would love it if it fits your personality. Everyone's house should be a reflection of who they are. Also, it should be a place where one really lives and not just a show-place. Perhaps some of us can get some good ideas from the way others decorate their houses. Thank you. Salud.

Miz Laurun - well, you can't really say I decorate anything - it's just get into the mood and do whatever - I should clean my house a bit more often though but who has time - lol...Thank yall. Salud.
I have quite a few antiques, some are 20s-40s and were inherited from my grandmother, some were purchased. I have a lot of antique prints (and repros) and frames on the walls, plus small curio shelves, a curved glass china cabinet, and a nice vintage mahogany dining room set with flower-carved chairs. It can be difficult to meld modern furniture, electronics and storage needs with an older home, but some day I'm hoping we will have the money to do everything we want, including installing the solid walnut library shelving we bought when they tore down the old MPLS public library.
Marianne - I have been on this computer three hours during the night, and five more since I got up this morning without eating. My next-door neighbor, Eduardo just came over with a plate full of delicious food including a TENDER STEAK. How about that to make my day!
My home has been decorated with the minimalists' style. I like to see as little as possible with no clutter. It affects my mode and productivity.
So I don't settle for imitations!
I have a question about your fan: do you actually turn it on? Have people been injured by flying objects? Do you have good homeowner's insurance???? LOL
The last thing i did was take three dresser drawes from an antique dresser my brother made into a desk for his dauhter (he was going to throw them away) so I took them and painted them white and stacked two of them, put legs on the bottom one, painted them white and roughed the paint up and sanded some of it off and got a glass top and now I have a coffee table. Plus i can put more of my stuff under the glass and save some shelf space because my apartment is small and I need the room.
The other drawer i paited the ssame way and put some shelves inside of it and hung it on the wall for pictures and more stuff.
Robert, that is so cool the way you used those drawers! I bet they look nice.
My house is decorated in an early nothing them. Nothing matches. Actually I collect anything Oriental and anything Native American.
Miz Lynn - oh I love the plastic light up penguin - it's almost as good as the talking deer head - kidding - but it does sound delightful and I love the fact that you go hawg wild at Christmas - I love to decorate myself - it changes every year. I love the idea of the piano - wow - how artsy...
Robert - I absolutely love your drawer idea and it's right up my alley - seriously - I have some things from carnivals in the 30's - chalkwear and I think drawers with glass on them would be fabulous - you're awesome to give us such a good idea. I bet it is really handy! and a space saver...thanks so much.
Miz Wilma - you're so funny - yes, the fan blades move and the other stuff just kind of blows in the wind - lol...no, nothing falls off. I'm waiting for my friend Trish to comment as she was one of the last folks to see it before we left Isabel. She owns a great gallery in Eureka.
Bob - you've got a GREAT house inside and out - yes, I'm jealous!
Miz Dorine - I imagine your house would be charming and quite serene - MY big question is what does your Kitchen look like?
Dalal - Vintage is a good word as I am the keeper of the flames and have lots of older furniture here and there - remember my dad was born in 1891 and I'm 58 so I have a few generations of thangs. aka things.
more later - gotta go fill my face. Salud
And yes, Mariana, the house will be yours if we can make it all work!
Miz Ruth - I think it's great Eduardo brought you some food - you deserve so much - you're a great lady - I know your home is homey and animal friendly just like mine - today I swept and got enough fur to make a whole other animal...lol..Thanks Miz Ruth.
Miz Vicky - I've seen pictures of your kitchen which I love - the rest of your house sounds great - please post pictures - let me know! Salud.
Now you know my own place is a strange shabby chic, early ghosttown, country cottage, found object - Cecile style I guess. I've got new furniture that I've slipcovered and thrown quilts on, and reproduction oak furniture that my cats have antiqued. i've got outside furniture inside and inside furniture outside. - I don't think I'm going to tell you any more, though, because someday I hope you'll be down here to see it for yourself - ok?
I kid you not. If you don't believe me I could post some pictures on my site.
old broken pottery and bones found out here....plenty of old bird nests too:)
I'm so lucky to still have my mama! her house is filled with the finds of a long lifetime ...funny prints and old books and all kinds of stuff and and well, her! My house is like a satellite to her planet. I too favor thrift shop and antique mart finds and have nothing or nearly nothing, new! One of my earliest memories is a junk shop with my mum, I must have been four. There was a cat clock on the wall that crossed it's eyes at measured intervals. I've been a goner ever since!
I had the Aga removed from the kitchen a couple of years ago and got rid of the farmhouse style decorations. It is now starkly modern, with a large gas cooking range/ovens. The only thing we kept was the flag-stoned floor. Freezing in winter, but looks great!
