How About a GATHERTHON For Gatherholics?
I'm going to start off with, "Please don't laugh if my idea is ludicrous." If it is totally whacked out I'm going to blame it on delusion's of idiocy. This could easily be the case since I arose at 2:30 am and plopped my big rear end down in front of the computer gathering and writing. It is now going on 8:00 pm as I write this or 15 ½ hours out of control obsession. Take away two hours at the most for eating, bathroom and showering, and running to the corner store for cigarettes and cappuccinos. God, someone please help me.
To all you gatherholics, even the ones still in the closet, or the weekend partakers only, you know how long you can sit in front your computer reading, commenting, writing, and posting. Hours and hours during the day that sometimes lead all the way into the night and into the next morning. Come on. How many of you have given up an entire night of sleep to gather and mainly write for this well loved community of ours?
We've all talked about how messy our houses have become because of this online community obsession. For me, my dishes have piled up again. So I can't cook, don't have anything clean to cook with. The dirty clothes have piled up, the clean clothes have piled up on the couch, the garbage needs taking out, the floors need sweeping and vacuuming, and the toilets need scrubbed. Calgon take me away.
Recently Monica suggested the next contest winnings be a year of maid cleaning service. The is the best and most practical idea I have heard. Of course, I would at least like a chance to be in the running and that will never happen with my writing. Not with my grammar and up against remarkable writers like Ed, Hannah, Kathryn, Monica, Stephen, and the list goes on. Including all the others I haven't even read yet out of the 20,000 gatherites. Many who are professional writers.
Here is my proposal for a contest. A Gatherthon. The main idea would be the last writer, or maybe five writers, left writing by not giving up would win. Maybe Gather could post a writing prompt like, "Write about your favorite high school experience," or "There's a man sitting alone at a dinner. What is he thinking?" every three hours. Each participant would then have three hours to post a story of any kind that was at least five hundred to fifteen hundred words. Each three hours they would be prompted again and this would go on as long as it took until eventually the winner or winners were the only ones left posting.
There would have to be some guidelines to the stories but I don't think it should be about strict grammar or the most eloquently written story but who could continue to post a well written one each three hours for the longest amount of time. Gather would have to provide the prompts to prevent people from publishing already written material.
I feel a lot more people would feel free to participate who would otherwise think they would not stand a chance in some of the other contest. But that's just my crazy opinion.
Since the majority of people work on gather, I believe, but I could be sorely wrong, that also that majority works Monday through Friday. Gather could start the contest on a Friday night at 6:00 pm.
Now for my total ignorance to shine. I have no concept of the internet, servers, or if Gather's system could even track something like this. If possible, would it be hard to do? How far out of a concept is this? How many of you would be interested in participating in a contest like this to get your house cleaned for a year? How do you think the contest should work? Your idea could be totally different, much better, and far more feasible than mine. Please, let's hear it. I'm just throwing this around to see what you think.

Seriously, I have no idea if anyone would be interested and the prize is far too expensive. You might just have to clean your house. I cleaned mine today, sort of.
Clare, Thanks for the support. I though it was a cool idea. But then again I am a little crazy. Yeah, once a month would be fabulous, wouldn't it.
i am not sure i could do a gatherthon, though. well, i know i couldn't. maybe essays on the worst dust bunnies or someth? ;)
As far as the stories would go. I think they should be kept light-hearted just like dust bunnies. Prompts that would just get the imagination flowing. Nothing like, "Explain Einstien's theory of realitivity." Thanks for commenting, Jessie.
Priscilla, thanks for the interest. Maybe it's just to out of the gather interest for most people. I don't kow. I just thought that so many of us spent so much time on this site and therefore ended up with messy houses why not have one pay off for the other. Thanks again for commenting.
How about a Gatheraholic Meet-up? Or could we stop posting long enough to actually GO someplace? :^)
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Carl, well, I said I was a little crazy.
Susan, thanks for commenting. Glad you would be interested if you could do it. I'm definitely for us all getting together to meet someplace!!
Richard, I quess I'll take that as a no, your not interested. Thanks anyway for commenting and letting me know your opinion. That's what I was wanting to get from this article. Hope you have a nice nap.
But why even more articles? Instead of those, how about it being the posting of a new comment on a different article/ image every three hours? That way a lot of people will come to attention.
And with a coffee machine being one of the prizes - there should be more than one reward for such a marathon.

Not everybody who works has bankers hours and days. Starting Friday night would be just as impossible for a nurse, police officer, and many other kindsof workers as starting at 8 AM Monday would be for a banker or secretary, Different contests will just have to run at different times for different start dates.
I desperately need maid service!
I'm all for people of a similar region on Gather getting together !!!
Barbara, thanks so much for the support. That's a great idea about the small prizes. I think that would also draw more attention to the contest. Excellent suggestion.
Nancy, I knew I could count on you. Thanks!!!
Stephen, Yeah. But we need a lot more people than this to get something like this going.
Dorine, I'm so glad you like the idea. But you've met your match in me. LOL. Your exactly right about the different times because of people's job. That is something that would have to be worked out.
Kathryn, maybe you could take a few days off for the contest. Take some well deserved vacation time. And I'm all for a big Gather Bash! Like I said in my gtky2 article. I'll beg, borrow, and steal to get to it if they ever have one. Nice talking to you this morning.
ok, you have to check out a movie from the eighties called Insignificance.. the character called The Actress (Marilyn Monroe) DOES explain the theory of relativity to the character called The Scientist (Einstein) using a toy car, some balloons and a torch (um, flashlight i mean) ... it is fantastic!
I thought every day was a gatherthon day? But 6 pm fridays is great cause that's 8 am Saturday for me and that way i could avoid the children ALL DAY!
Carolyn, it does seem like a gatherthon on some days for sure. Glad you could jump on the bandwagon. Thanks!
Perhaps Gather could get a Maid Service company that is nationwide to sponsor a contest on Gather. Then we could all write an essay on "Why I Need a Maid." Then the Maid Company could choose the best one - out of the top 20 Gather Staff sends them.
And it could work by monitoring the activity level of the people on here. For example, if it stipulated no more than 30 minutes between postings -and that could include comments or publishing. I don't think you should have to publish though.
People type at different speeds, and think of ideas at different rates... (Besides I'd whip all your butts in the typing dept, LOL!) So as long as folks are lasting the whole time, I think you are considered "in". And if folks have other obligations, they can participate at the next one. Perhaps they can be done different times to accomodate different time zones?
Anyway, good creative thinking....keep those ideas and enthusiasm coming Serina. That's why we love ya! dirty house, madness and all!!!!
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS, WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS....OF THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you ladies and gentleman - And goodnight!
LOL...thanks for directing me back here Monica! You are too funny! I can just see you washing dishes with that song blasting from the speakers.
