PADOVA
GREAT food - all local dishes - a spiced ground duck on homemade pasta, octopus, radichicco risotto, polenta, so many hard sausages that only a photo will help you identify them - Come to Italy for the food!
BUT - the FRESCOES are beautiful, too!
the Scrovegni Chapel has a stunning ceiling and 4 wall 700 year old fresco - the most intact and beautiful in the world! You have to see it, even if you don't think of yourself as an art lover!
The art and architecture are magnificent, and the ancient history - "that 12th century arched gateway is on the foundation of a 1st century Roman gate" - is kind of unbelievable. This is the real Italy, Not the Florence/Rome/Venice top destination kind of touristy spot. This is Padova!
Here, ladies walking down the street will help you with your Italian pronunciation, fish mongers want to talk politics, and everyone wants to be sure you are having a good time.
I love Italy
I'll tell you how breakfast is after I get up tomorrow - but - speaking of which, I have to go to bed first. It's after midnight here - so sorry to have to hurry off.
Miss you
Mantegna Hotel in Padova - a TALL tower of nice rooms with great views and a sweet staff - look for it on the way into town.
