Without question, one of the finest and most historical bed and breakfast facilities in the New England area is the Martin Hill Inn, located in Portsmouth, NH. Situated on land that was originally owned by New Hampshire Lt. Governor George Vaughn, the Martin family purchased it in 1710. The Martin Hill Inn is comprised or two separate buildings - the main house consists of three rooms and was built in 1815, and the guest house was built in 1850 and offers four rooms. Both buildings were opened to the public as a bed and breakfast in 1978, and the inn has become one of the more popular travel destinations in the area.
Interestingly, all guest rooms in both buildings are corner rooms with windows on two walls to take advantage of the sights of the third oldest settlement in the United States. All guest rooms are air conditioned, and offer either iron, spindle or brass beds. Each room is beautifully adorned, some featuring antique furniture and original hardwood flooring.
The Martin Hill Inn offers amenities to visitors such as a free breakfast, fresh baked pastries, and a wonderfully decorated dining room featuring a massive mahogany dining table. One of the best aspects of the Martin Hill Inn are the perennial gardens which allow guests to view over 20 different species such as Primroses, Goats Beard, Ferns, Roses and Day Lilies while seated comfortably outdoors. Also, it is only a fifteen minute walk from the Martin Hill Inn to Portsmouth's historic Market Square.
Room rates for the Martin Hill Inn range from $105 to $210 per night, depending on the choice of room. The inn offers a three-night package which ranges in price from $480 to $565, and in Summer and Fall there is a two night minimum on all weekend stays. Check-in time at the Martin Hill Inn is between 4 and 6 PM and check-out is by 10:30 AM.
Locally, Portsmouth has many distinct attractions for a town with a population slightly over 21,000 people. These include over a dozen local beaches and Prescott Park - a waterfront park with amazing scenery. Portsmouth also offers the Strawberry Banke Museum with exhibits from 3 different centuries, and the Albacore Museum offering naval submarine history. Additionally, Redhook Brewery offers daily tours of it's facility.
The Martin Hill Inn is only 1 1/4 hour drive from Boston, 1 hour from Manchester, and one hour from Portland, which makes interesting day trips an added bonus to extended stays.
