Ok, so do you like to fish?

If so, what kind of fish to you like to "try" to catch...and do you have any luck?

I love to fish for bass. I enjoy the casting & reeling motion, watching some, waiting for that nibble.

My husband love to fish for Northerns, or at least he did when we lived in Minnesota. He loves the fight they have in them.

 Now he is enjoying bass fishing & trying to land a big ol' Gar, to no avail yet!

Do you have a favorite bait that you use?

A special pole? Lightweight, open reel, tin can?

There is a subdivision I drive through sometimes on the way home from work. They have a lake inhabited with bass and I sometimes stop to fish for an hour or so on my way home. i once caught an alligator gar in this lake. He was one big ugly fish. I generally use my 5 ft. ultralight with an open face spinning reel spooled with 10# power pro.

My preference is to fish salt water. Speckled trout, redfish and flounder. All are real good eatin'. And nothing pulls like a redfish!
Do you catch many bass?
What in the world do you do with an alligator gar when caught? Are they really big?
I haven't seen the gar hubby is trying to catch, he just tells me they are really big & near the shore...we assume they are spawning, mating, or something similar.
I've never fished saltwater yet! I hope to do so, maybe out of Galveston this year!

When I fish the subdivision lake I usually catch 2-3 bass in an hour. The gar I caught was about 30 inches. A good 6 inches of that was a mouth full of ugly teeth. Since he took a plastic worm, I just cut the line and threw him back. I was fishing from the bank in an area with lots of cover. I think that's the key. They are ambush preditors. They hide under logs and stuff and dart out when something swims by.

There are two lighted fishing piers in Galveston and another about 15 miles further at San Luis Pass. Check out sanluispass.com. If you want to catch speckled trout, plan to fish at night under the lights.

WM - Thanks for the tips....I hope to catch one when I get there, but I'm not sure what I'll do with all of those teeth!

Gar, ther are 2 kinds. The long nosed gar called more commonly an alligator gar & the short or snub-nose gar. Both are trash fish. The Southern Indians such as the Creek, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Seminole, Calusa, Micanopee, etc. used the scales of teh large alligator gars for arrow points. Alligator gar can grow up to over 8 feet in length. The gar will take baby water fowl such as msal ducklings, etc. for a food source. They also will eat small water snakes, frogs. etc.

Ahh...Donald, I have to catch one! But of course I will put him back in the water, after I take his picture...I need him to eat the small water snakes & frogs to help that population down!

You know Priscilla, I haven't been fishing in quite a long time and that's something I need to rectify. When I did fish I loved trolling (usually with a lindy rig and a worm or leech) and if we caught walleyes, great. If we didn't, it was fine by me too.
Julia - I like trolling too, along the shore line, casting under docks & pontoons. Some of the big ones like to hide in those places. I really like to fish a weed line, that's where I seem to find the bass.

We live on the East Coast of Florida and have a center console fishing boat, so we typically go offshore for Dorado (mahi mahi), Sailfish, Cobia, King Fish, and Tuna. Instead of trolling, we usually fly the kite and use live bait. Lately we've really gotten into swordfishing, which you do at night, about 20 miles offshore. That's done drifting with 5 baits (combination of live blue runners and dead squid) at different distances from the boat and different depths. We also use a large sea anchor to keep the drift right.

I have GOT to try sea fishing. I have never had the oprotunity & I really want to bring in a big one! I suppose all lake fish will look tiny after I real in a huge one!
