I enjoyed a most wonderful experience last week. My baby daughter had a baby boy! She and her husband invited me into the delivery room to assist and watch the wonderment of childbirth. I will be eternally grateful for the experience of a lifetime. You see, having given birth to 3 children of my own, I've never been privy to the experience from the "other side". This was my baby daughter, who not so long ago, was an infant in my arms. 25 years may seem a long time, but it's a flash in time really. 4 years ago, my eldest daughter gave birth to my first grandchild. A little girl named Alyxandra. Although I was not in the delivery room, it was a heartfelt experience to see my daughter with her own daughter. Now, it's come full tilt. My youngest daughter has her own son. We, at times, forget how truly blessed we are in life. To see our children grow healthy and thrive, and to give birth to a whole new generation. I wonder what our world will be like when my grandchildren are my age. What new and fascinating things will be introduced. Will they contribute to making our world a better place? Will they have strong morals and values in their lives? Will they grow to appreciate the simple things in life? I surely hope so. My wish is that my children, and their children, may bring small but needed changes to this world. Enjoying the fruits of their labors, enjoying a slower, more enjoyable life. This is my wish. While I am still on this earth, I will continue to strive to teach my children and grandchildren that it's not about how much you make each year, nor about how big your house is, nor about how many new cars you have. Life is about being. Simple. Gracious. Helping others when you can. Loving each day, being grateful for small pleasures. This will be my legacy. My parents instilled such thoughts and values in me and my brother. It is our turn to instill the same in our children and their families.
The price of seeing a new life born into this world and knowing that you were a small part of it......Priceless.
