A bottle of Bayer's heroin. Between 1890 and 1910 heroin was sold as a non-addictive substitute for morphine. It was also used to treat children with strong cough.

 

 

 

Metcalf Coca Wine was one of a huge variety of wines with cocaine on the market. Everybody used to say that it would make you happy and it would also work as a medicinal treatment.

 

 

Produced by Maltine Manufacturing Company of New York . It was suggested that you should take a full glass with or after every meal. Children should take half a glass.

Paragoric (opium in alcohol) was over the counter until the 1950's for diarhea. Terpin hydrate with codiene as OTC until the 1970's for cough.

And we still use Opium in medicines today. Cocca, was used in Coke to build its customer base for many years until the Government made them quit it. That is where "Coke" got its name.

I also remember paragoric, my mom used to rub it on our gums when we were babies and were cutting teeth!.....Some great old bottles.

Parapectolin was a preparation that had paragoric and kaopectate together for the relief of diarrhea. You got it from the pharmacist but had to sign for it. No Rx was needed.
It worked GREAT!!! (1960's or so)
