Soccer

Soccer
It's a ball
A grassy field
A net wrapped arrangement of posts
At each end

You kick the ball
Back and forth between guys
Or gals as the case may be
And try to put it into the net
That your opponent is guarding

It's fast
It's fun
It can even be exilerating
To run across that field
Controlling the ball
Faking out your adversary

Unless you are the fat guy
Then you get to watch from the bench
As the others play
Or try to play as the case may be

The bench can be very uncomfortable
But I guess that happens
When you are the fat guy

They came in last for the season
Maybe they should have put
The fat guy in
He was a top rate defenseman
Not to long ago

Actually, yes it is a real memory...and not even a long ago one. I play, or shall I sit, in a men's league team. And sadly, am the only fat guy (and second oldest) on a team of mostly all skinny young guys. I'm a rugby player, but they had never seen that game and so had no idea the fat guy is fast. Oh well, I guess I shouldn't whine...had my day....getting old sucks.

Getting old? Odd but that reminds me of something that my grandfather used to say..."A man is only as old as he thinks he is." A somewhat long story that actually I may just post.

There are no leagues for the older guys? I have done games for many of the older leagues around here and to be honest I enjoy the older games much more than the younger leagues.

I agree with you. I feel like I am still 25....well OK...30...but they all seem to feel that 40ish is really oldish...Oh well...let me get them in a rugby ruck and see who comes out in one piece and not limping. I may be senior to them, and twice as big as few but I can still run and bench press my body weight plus some.

As far as age in the leagues, this one (its a church league) actually has some older guys but they are all on other teams. The city up here does have a co-ed league that is mostly over 35.
