Benjamin's Birds
©2006, Basil Sands
for Benjamin, my eight year old son,
who loves to listen to the birds
I sit in my house
Doing my school work
I listen for them every spring and summer day
The birds in my backyard
They come to visit me
And teach me their songs
To comfort my soul
The birds in my backyard
I am only a child
But they know me
These winged messengers
I close my eyes and glide to them
Where they sing to me
Their sweet melodies
Which tell me of beautiful treasures
Mountains of gold no hand can touch
Sparkling sunshine creating rainbows in my soul
Their song carries me to clouds
Where I look down and see emerald seas of rolling grass
And the birch and the spruce and the willow
Sparkling streams of pure clean water
Trickle through my very being
And I sing their tune
Sing sweetly to the Lord above
With them to guide, to teach, to fly
The birds in my backyard
