The Dreams we live on

Dreams
Good or bad
Are what we have to live on
They come to us in the night
Maybe even during an afternoon nap
They tell us things we will not listen to while awake
Sometimes they release stress
Sometimes they only create more
Dreams
Are the substance of our thoughts
Piled into images
I try to grasp the meaning
And once in while I understand
I jump into a pool with my clothes on
The water doesn't splash, though
People are staring, not blinking
A flooded room
A red sweater
No way out of dangers way
Fruit to eat, crunchy but flavorless
Death's head laughs at me
It's bony hands raised skyward
Coddled insanity mumbling in a damp corner
A siren in the distance
Driving with no lights on
Darkness, utter darkness
When I awaken from these many dreams
I look to my left to make sure she is still there
I look to see that my house is still mine
And my family all here and breathing
The sun returns and I thank it for coming back to me
And pray these dreams will end
These dreams will end
I pray they are only dreams
Dreams
Good or bad
They're what we have to live on
