This week is the start of a theme that I'll be doing with a few artists as the need arists. Previously I've done career spanning shows for many artists who have had extensive careers in music and though they may still be making great music they are more than likely past their peak. However, this series dedicated to artists who are making their greatest contributions (to date) right now. The goal is to spread the word now so I'm not doing a "this is the artist you slept on" ten years from now... :)
First up is MASAI BEY. I've been a big fan of his work since I first heard his music over the phone in '95. Since then he's been "quietly" working on the Underground honing his craft and building his skills. In 2006 he just started to explode with material and in that time we've been blessed with:
Panacea Goldmind (2006)
Natural Magic Music (2006)
Vitamin EP (digital only) (2007)
Masai Bey & BMS-C87
Masai Bey-Art Of The Covenant (2008: Just dropped this week!!) (digital only)
He's in the midst of completing another solo album ("Classical Trained"), working on an album with Lifelong of Stronghold, and still has plenty of great tracks around to put together a "Deleted Scenes" release at some point.
Honestly, he's a living definition of what a Hip Hop artist should be. He takes his craft seriously. He gives the maximum experience with minimal resources. He's the producer, the MC, the DJ, the record label, the promoter, etc... (and let's not forget he is an accomplished Human Beat Box). As a writer he knows how to have a good time and when to deliver an important messages. As a producer he challenges the sampler rather than use it as a crutch. He pays tribute to the origins of the culture yet his music often seems like a glimpse into the future.
This week on the show we'll be exploring his career in music from '95 to "Art Of The Covenant" ('08). A nice combination of rarities, demos, exclusives, and a extensive look at his impressive catalog of releases. I also had the opportunity to interview him and pieces of the interview will used thru out the broadcast this Saturday. The full interview will eventually make it's way on the redef blog: redefradio.gather.com/
Whether you are a listener, record exec, radio host, DJ, promoter, publicist, or artist yourself check out the show just to make sure you aren't one the sleepers!
IN THE MEANTIME, CHECK HIM OUT ON MYSPACE:
