First off, thanx for all the great feedback I've received on these
"Tribute To Hip Hop Radio Shows"! I'm glad people are enjoying
listening to them or just appreciating the concept of them as much as
I'm enjoying creating them. This is the last "official" week of this
theme. The focal points are what I would have to consider the most
influential shows of the 90s, The Wake Up Show & The Stretch
Armstrong Featuring Bobbito.
Honestly I never heard The Wake Up Show. My knowledge of it is thru
it's "legend"and their world famous freestyles. The closest I've come
to hearing a complete show is the Heiro Vs Hobo battle which is
obviously not a complete representation of what the show is, although
still classic. As for Stretch Armstrong Show, this is easily one of
the most inspirational shows of all time for me. They were doing all
the things that I would do if I had a radio show and eventually got
to do similar things when I did have a radio show. They of course are
known for their legendary freestyle sessions as well. Plus they are
equally important and known for their playing of demos and
introducing so many key artists to the Hip Hop world...oh yeah, and
their off-beat, often weird senses of humor as well...ha.
Anyway, this week here songs and/or classic freestyles from these two
shows by the likes of Voodu, Kurious, Cenobites, Nas, Organized
Konfusion, Artifacts, Company Flow, Jay Z, Ras Kass, Arsonists, Words
Worth, Crooked I, Craig G, Kurious, OC, Chino XL, Maddskillz, and more!
I also wanted to rep my man, Mike Nardone, who has been representing
on the airwaves for a long time and still going strong so I'll be
playing at least one classic freestyle session from his now classic
radio show with partner EMZ on 92.3 The Beat, "The Joint".
With only four hours total dedicated to the entire History Of Rap
Radio I obviously couldn't cover all the key shows and station. Plus
some shows I just know of and don't have any audio of or have never
heard audio from to really properly represent. When I get this
updated on my blog I'll be shooting to do a more complete "timeline"
of The History of Rap Radio so Im trying to fill in a lot of blanks
right now. If you got start/end dates on any key radio shows around
the world please drop knowledge. Here's a few shout outs to other key
players that I didn't cover in this special: Gary Byrd, Sonny Hopson,
Awesome Two, Nasty Ness (Seattle), Electrifying Mojo (Detroit), JP Chill
(Chicago), Tony Humphries and Frankie Crocker (98.7 Kiss NYC),
Pinkhouse (R.I.P-Chicago), Original Concept (Long Island), Spectrum
CIty (Long Island), Wildman Steve, DJ Riz, Kevvy Kev "The Drum" (Bay
Area), Poetess (LA), Dave Pearce (UK), Stu Allen (UK), John Peel
(UK), Davey D (Bay), B Mello (Seattle/Vancouver), Kutmasta Kurt, DJ
Eclipse, Funkmaster Flex, and the list goes on and on.
Major shout out to Tim Westwood (UK) who I was trying to spotlight in
one of these weeks but couldn't find the tapes in time to convert and
then ran out of time. I'll have to rep for him in the future. Who was
a huge influence in and out of the UK. You can read a little about
him at Stretch Armstrong's blog "The Posse Cut" section: http://

Don't Forget to read the "overly" informational blog:
redefradio.gather.com/
There's lots of lyrical analyzing, history and all that. Expect
updates weekly.
Coming soon will be more random rambling about rap as well as
Interviews (up first: Count Coolout, Mele Mel and The Poetess), and
a few other concepts that I'm toying with.
In the archives find articles on: International Hip Hop, History of
Reggae/Hip Hop, History of Story-telling In Hip Hop, and much more!!

*LAST WEEK CORRECTION: I accidently, in a typo, identify The Wizard
as Jeff MILES when it is indeed MILLS. My man PNS with the ever critical
hipped me to that. I'll try to be more careful :)
