Hey y'all Redef is rocking on the radio.... Yes, we are still paying tribute to the key players in radio game history. This week we finish up our 98.7 Kiss Dedication with a Latin Rascals master mix and a Shep Pettibone Remix. From there we head out to the Midwest in good ole' Detroit. I used to visit family there a lot in the 80s and in '85 I turned on WJLB and just heard a man going crazy on the turntables...ha. That man was The Wizard a.k.a Jeff Mills. He was so quick it was ridiculous...clever too. DJ Plain Ole Bill does a fine job recreating a classic '86 mix by him with some Run-D.M.C, Whodini and LL Cool J. The bulk of the show is dedicated to the Legendary KDAY! For those who don't know they were the first 24 hour rap station. They were based in LA and the story surrounding that station is amazing to say that least. We'll hear tracks from a few of the DJs who were part of their Mixmasters Crew (ex: Joe Cooley, Aladdin, M Walk. Plus some original mixes from Dr. Dre (Rodium Swap Meet Mixtape '86) and Curtis Harmon who were also Mixmasters on the station. All that is accented with some words from the most popular voice and figure from the KDAY Legend, Mr Mack Attack Himself, Greg Mack. I got a chance to interview with him about a week ago and we will be giving some the key snippets on this week show. Here him talk about; The Start of KDAY, The Birth of the Mixmasters, Why KDAY went off air, KDAY's Open Door Artist policy, and The Future of Rap Radio. The show comes to a close with a short but effective dedication to the much under-rated Mixmaster Gee. He had a excellent show on KACE in Inglewood and made a couple underground classic records, has a excellent production/remix discography, has worked the mixing boards for Dr Dre (ex: The Chronic), and who knows what else. -here's last weeks show: arch 24, 2007 A Tribute To Hip Hop Radio Pt. 2 of 4 (Kool DJ Red Alert & Chuck Chillout) http://www.publicradio.org/tools/media/player/minnesota/radio/programs/redefinition_radio/2007/03/20070324_redefinition_radio Playlist Chill Rob G - Red Alert Intro (We Can Do This) '88 Ultramagnetic MCs - "Bait" '87 Instrumental: Dominatrix - "Dominatrix Sleeps Tonite" '85 -Plain Ole Bill "Kool DJ Red Alert Recreation Mix" (w/Jerry Young) Kool DJ Red Alert Intro #1 Mantronix - "Fresh Is The Word" '85 TLA Rock - "Breakdown" '85 RunDMC - "Here We Go RunDMC - "Rock Box" '84 U.T.F.O - "Bite It" '85 Instrumental: Run-DMC - "You Talk To Much" '85 -DJ Nikoless "Red Alert Meets Chuck Chillout Special Mini Mix" (w/Rob Bass) Kool DJ Red Alert Intro #2 Sparky D - "He's My DJ (Red Alert)" '86 Kool DJ Red Alert - "Hip Hop On Wax Volume 2" '84 DJ Chuck Chillout - "Hip Hop On Wax" '84 The B Boys - "2, 3 Break" '83 The B Boys - "Cuttin Herbie" (Vocal Version) '83 The B Boys - "Rock The House" '83 Instrumental: The Dismasters - "Small Time Hustler" '87 -DJ Plain Ole Bill "Chuck Chillout Recreation Mix" Chuck Chillout Intro Collage: Ced Gee, Bugsy, Chuck Chillout, Ultramag, Kool Chip U.T.F.O - "Leader Of The Pact" '85 Word Of Mouth - "King Kut" '85 Grandmaster Flash - "Larry's Dance Theme" '85 Chuck Chillout Shouts: Finesse & Synquis, Stetsasonic, Professor X & Positive K, Instrumental: Chuck Chillout - "Operator -STILL TO COME ARE TRIBUTES: Wake Up Show, The Stretch Armstrong Show feat.
