I don't know about you but growing up in the 80s and living in Germany I really counted on families joining the armed forces from New York and moving to my army base....ha. It happened often enough and those radio show tapes were often how I was exposed to Hip Hop. That continued when I moved to the Chicago area with College Radio and eventually again with the dubbed tapes courtesy of Stretch & Bobbito.
Anyway, The History of Hip Hop Radio. I nearly went crazy trying to figure out how to pull this off. I still don't have a great way of explaining it...ha. I'll be playing songs from some the most important figures in Hip Hop radio history since a lot of them made music also (Jocko, Lady B, Supreme Team, etc...) or had songs made about them (Mr Magic, Red Alert, etc...). ÂÂÂ
However the funniest part to me is the "Recreation Mixes". I've wanted to do this for a long time. I remember it was 2002/03 or so when I first started converting my old New York radio tapes to CD. There was a very particular Red Alert mix from '85 that I have always loved and then some Chuck Chillout mixes as well (both from 98.7 Kiss). It was then I had the concept of recreating them and releasing them as some sort of "classic radio mix cd" or something. I wanted to get Red Alert and Chuck Chillout behind it and then do put it together but never got around to it. Then the P Brothers did a similar concept a couple years ago for Afrika's Islam's "Zulu Beat" show so I got discouraged for waiting too long. However, this concept seemed a little different and perfect for the radio rather than a Mix CD. Anyway, DJ Plain Ole Bill put together the mixes and then I went to the old original shows and grabbed soundbytes, freestyles, drops, outros, intros and whatever else and fused them into Bill's Recreations. I had Mr Plain Ole Bill play they same songs, same order and do similar turntable tricky to make them nearly exact replicas of these shows!!!
This week for Part One we pay tribute to Jocko, Supreme Team, Lady B, and special recreation mixes for Zulu Beat and Mr Magic's Rap Attack w/Marley Marl.ÂÂÂ
This is probably one my favorite concept shows I've done yet so I encourage you to tune in and check it out!!!
