This is a theme show that I started off 2006 with. It was definitely the most responded to theme and show(s) in general that I have done with Redefinition Radio. I got a lot of great feedback via email, myspace, online promo, etc... from these shows.
Reggae and Hip Hop have long been intertwined. Kool Herc, The Godfather Of Hip Hop, was born in Jamacia and brought some of his roots into the creation of Hip Hop culture. Certainly the vocal stylings (a.k.a Toasting) of the "DJs" in Jamaica was influential on Hip Hop. I found a lot of interesting info doing some google searches on "hip hop reggae" and similar variations. There's also some great info and connections made in the book "Can't Stop Won't Stop" (a book definitly worth checking out).
I had been wanting to do some research and ultimately a special on the connection of Reggae and Hip Hop for years. Mainly because Reggae is something that I feel I'm not as well versed on as I should be (though I think I considerably increased that knowledge since this special). In my younger years I was so focused on Hip Hop that most other forms of music got neglected. The things that did get thru were those that were most accesible. I had the soul, funk and r&b around me from my parents and older sister. Pop & Rock were represented in what dominated the airwaves of the usually one American station I had on the Army Bases of Germany. Honestly, growing up there wasn't much if any Reggae music around me that I can recall. I'm pretty sure I first became really aware of it thru Hip Hop. I don't think I really got any serious interest until about '87 courtesy of artists like Just Ice & Krs One. Me and my friends started to explore Reggae much more. We made ourselves some compilation tapes and those two or three tapes were our complete Reggae experience (I actually used those very same tapes as reference points when doing this special). Even after that I didn't go out and seek more info. I didn't start buying Regga releases. At best, I just was able to better appreciate it when I heard it in clubs and parties. It wasn't until the last few years that I really started to open my mind more to music outside the realm of Hip Hop and as a result became completely intrigued and interested in Reggae. The tipping point was discovering the older "Roots & Culture" stuff that I that didn't seem to be getting as much attention at the parties and clubs I was at, which were dominated by dancehall. There was definitely some dancehall that caught my attention. However, it's probably safe to say that my fascination with Dancehall more often came from the use of the Hip Hop styled production (which is a great example of the cycle of music as Reggae influenced Hip Hop and then Hip Hop was influencing the sound of Reggae). It was the spiritual and personal lyrics and quite often the great voices of "Roots & Culture" that won me over. I suggest if you have interest in this topic you do some searching as there is a wealth info on it. Being that I'm new to a lot of this I don't feel qualified to speak to much on it so I will let this list below be my primary contribution and you can listen to the radio special in the Redefinition Radio archives to experience the music.
Per usual, this list isn't meant to be a complete list by any means. It's merely a starting point of some stuff that I had access to and what I used for a reference point to put together the radio shows. Please read and enjoy. Feel free to reach out and respond with any comments, suggestions, corrections and things of the like.
