Why do people eat instant mashed potatoes???

I think that if you are cooking dinner already then why not boil so potatoes and mash them it is not hard.  Some will say I don't like peeling them to that I say DON'T !  The best part of potatoes is the skin leave it on.  If you use a mixer then a lot of the skin will stick to the beaters when mashing them.  Instant mashed potatoes don't taste like real one's.  They add so much crap that you don't need in your body.  So to all that eat them stop and eat real mashed potatoes!!  If not them give me a good reason.  If you have a good reason then you might change my mind.

Wow - you have some pretty strong opinions about instant mashed potatoes! It makes me re-think that fudge recipe I just printed out that uses them. Mashed potatoes made from scratch taste so much better and are not like rubber, not to mention being so inexpensive to make. So I wholeheartedly support you.

Me too! People look at "convenience" foods like it's really going to save them time or money, when really it takes about as much time, costs more and tastes terrible! It's nice to be able to add stuff to mashed potatoes, like garlic, cheeses, sweet cream, herbs, horseradish, other stuff that really makes a staple a treat!

I prefer the flavor of the fake potatoes over the real stuff. That's why I use them. It's not a "convenience" factor for me, but rather a taste preference.

I don't see how you could think they taste better! Did your mom make instant?? If so then I can see it. If that is what you grew up eating then your taste buds don't know better. Please don't take this the wrong way! I am not trying to be rude.

I never like instant until we bought some at Sams club. These are the best. Taste just like homemade mashed. I still make real mashed to it depends. I always make real for holidays. If its just 2 of us I cheat and use instant.
I make potatoe salad and leave the skins on.

Why do people eat instant mashed potatoes??? one question mark is all you need. However, I would suggest making this a statement (I don't understand why some people like instant mashed potatoes) instead of a question with an obvious answer. People must like them or they wouldn't eat them.

One year at Thanksgiving when I went to set the table for my mom I asked her where the mashed potatoes were, and she realized somehow she had forgotten to cook them. She made instant potates in about five minutes and we set them on the table with everything else. Not one person at the table even noticed. We always smile about that. I don't believe she's done that since, but who knows?

I'm finding it interesting that instant vs. real potatoes should cause such a controversy. I personally keep a box on hand for emergencies and for use in thickening some soups, using in some bread recipes and yes, even for making lefse. Paige, I'm with you when it comes to leaving the peelings on when mashing real potatoes. (My mother was appalled at my being so rebellious!) They have more nutrition, texture and taste that way - but that's just my opinion. I always eat the skins on baked potatoes too, that's a favorite! I'm curious about why this subject is so important to you, though, or was it just a spontaneous peeve of yours that needed to explode? (I have those too!)

I also use them to thicken stews, and such if I am out of cornstarch.

My mom always made instant potatoes; so you could have a point. That's probably why I'm so used to them and enjoy their taste more than the real deal. It's not that I don't like regular mashed potatoes, but the instant is what I grew up with and so it's probably stuck in my DNA somewhere to prefer the fakes.

I prefer real mashed but in an emergency they sell a nice refrigerated product by Simply Pototoes in the dairy case...no powdery flakes or anything like that and they come in good flavors, like sour cream and chive, garlic and home style with skin on...just nuke them in the microwave, add your own butter and ...voila!
