It sounds a bit complicated..
I guess it will be explained further soon?
Hi Krystal. I hope you are getting lots of rest. Iam trying out this feature. It looks like it might be cool and not too confusing.
They look great so far, i will let you know later. i am still checking them out:)
I just signed on early and it looks like we are back up. Let's see how this works.
If you follow the conversation by email, is that your email inside of Gather or outside?
outside
Love the new link feature in the comment space. Very user friendly! THANKS gather!
Glad you like it, Rose
Feels more like a conversation. I like it! Best update yet.
I love it too. Very user friendly and neater.
I know the NING web sites use the reply to this comment but I never use it.
As for Gather, I feel it litters the page.
Sorry to hear you don't like it, Kathryn. I like being able to reply directly to someone's comment.
Why on earth is the most popular image something from Februrary?? Last night it was something from 2007!
This is rediculous, shouldn't the focus be on CURRENT content not stuff that has been sitting for a six months or longer? Please tell me this is a glitch. . .
And, I am not to keen on having to pop open an html editor, html is not that hard, it wasn't difficult to make a link prior to this. And is it just me or is the obnoxious orange bubble around comments. . . more obnxious?
I have a meeting to attend, I'm sure I'll have more to say when I return.
The popular content is not displaying correctly. It should show popular content within the past week. We'll have that correctly soon.
Praise be to glitches then. I was going to develop a brain anurism if it was going to be reflecting "all time" content instead of current.
Another question,
Why the past week? What was the problem with having daily features/popular content? Something posted on say, Sunday might not be relevant come Friday afternoon. . .
"And is it just me or is the obnoxious orange bubble around comments. . . more obnxious?"
Agreed.
What is the deal with if you want to past somethng on here, in a post. or now a comment, you always have to give permission three time to past from your clipboard? This is the only site I have seen with that, and now it is added to comments.
I really wish that when you do an upgrade, it would actually be an upgrade instead of a downgrade as usual.
I'll have to try pasting. I haven't tried that yet.
"I really wish that when you do an upgrade, it would actually be an upgrade instead of a downgrade as usual."
Quoted for truth.
I just wish that we'd get some of the features we've been asking for ad nauseum (Comment editor, revamp to ratings, more spotlight slots on personal pages, our old home page back. . . )
Hi Dan, I pasted using IE and Firefox into comments and posts without being asked to confirm. Are you still experiencing this?
Ohh and put the name and date back on the bottom again please.
Do you think this is a change you could get used to or do you find it too obtrusive?
I find it distracting, Possibly because the link to the person's profile is bright blue.
Mary Anne I have to say I hate the reply to a comment the way it is. It puts the comment under the person you are replying to instead of keeping the comments in order, You now have to go back through the entire list of comments every time you refresh a page to try to find the new ones. I missed new ones on my own article. Wouldn't it have been much easier to read if when replying to a comment it just quoted the comment in your own comment so you could respond to it but it still kept all the comments in order of when they were posted. I just can't stand it and it makes me not even want to read comments now at all.
I see what you're saying, Chris. I'll pass your feedback to our designers. Thanks!
I agree with that Dan. I prefer it under the comment too.
I agree with Chris and Dan. Plus I think there are those "people haters" who will discredit a comment just because of WHO posted it and won't actually even read it.
Not fond of the "feature" page, myself. Why in the world does it include articles that are several years old?
Donna, this page is not displaying properly. The popular content should show content from the past week and right now it's showing content from all time. We hope to have that fixed soon.
E-mail preferences, is too detailed. I mean why would I want to know when someone of my "Friends" posted something unless I was stalking them? I do not believe that part of it is needed.
How the heck do you turn off the email notification for when some one replies to your comment? My personal email is cluttered with tons of a these notifications.
Chris, we're answering "How to" questions at the Daily Help Forum. Please join us there.
The feature page threw me off a little bit~I'll get used to it =)
I LOVE THE COMMENT ON COMMENT FEATURE, and the option for email notification~this will allow me to keep track of articles I actually care about~ =)
MaryAnne, I saw you replied to my coment in my notifications but I do not have time to look for it here. I did not see it immediately.
I did put up an article on the upgrade which you might want to look at.
I do not like the upgrade and many also do not.
I really WISH Gather would stop breaking what is not broken.
Gather staffers just DO NOT GATHER THE WAY MEMBERS DO AND MAKE CHANGES THAT PISS PEOPLE OFF.
As I say MaryAnne, I did not find your reply to my comment here because I DO NOT HAVE TIME TO LOOK FOR IT.
I could not see it in a cursory glance, I just do not have time.
I am raelly upset by this and if you take a look at my page now where I have an article up,
Gather has introduced the BIGGETS COMMENT HIGHJACKING POTENTIAL OF ALL TIME.
I AM NOT UPSET BY PEOPLE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THIS FEATURE, I AM JUST SAYING THAT THERE WILL BE SIGNIFICANT PROBLEMS WITH THIS.
THE ADDITION OF COMMENT REPLY WAS COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY.
I love the comment on comments feature, with the ability to follow conversations.
I'm having to get used to the names being moved to the top, but it's just a change, I don't feel strongly about it either way. Likewise with the html change in comments. It will take getting used to, but it makes more sense than having html in articles work one way, and in comments another.
Haven't noticed anything else yet.
I like the ability to reply to comments also. I received two in my e-mail where people replied to my comment, and for my purposes its good. I usually do go back to see if someone (usually the author) has replied to what I had to say and now it comes to me without my having to go back and look. No complaints from me.....not yet anyway, lol.
"Do you think this is a change you could get used to or do you find it too obtrusive?"
It is obtrusive.
"Hi Dan, I pasted using IE and Firefox into comments and posts without being asked to confirm. Are you still experiencing this?"
I'm using IE, and I just went through it twice, on both comments on here.
Heather W.; "I just wish that we'd get some of the features we've been asking for ad nauseum (Comment editor, revamp to ratings, more spotlight slots on personal pages, our old home page back. . . )"
I fully agree.
MaryAnne, Some of us are still having problems with getting e-mail notifications from groups we belong to but don't want them from in our outside mail. This is from a previous "upgrade".
The Gather e-mail system is still glitchy. When you are sending a reply to someone it is still at times telling you that you have to pick someone to send it to. Also sometimes after sending you get the error page, others a blank page and still others your sent page. If you get one of the first two then you have to go to your sent box to see if it was actually sent. This is from a previous "upgrade".
Yes, and please move the commenters name etc. back to the bottom of the box.
Other than that it looks good so far.
Oh, and my hometown is now: ????? ?? ???? ?????? I finally got the edit box to come up, but there is no submit button in it.
I haven't been on much so far, but I agree with Dan R, the name and timestamp being switched to the top of the comment is very annoying to me. Also, I agree with Heather W about the changes most everyone has been wanting and waiting for.
The reply to this comment feature is one that could be useful, but for the way Gather itself runs, the way this feature has been implemented isn't the most useful. I'm not sure yet what would be better, but this just seems so out of place. Actually, I like the way Lifehacker.com has comments and replies set up for their articles.
Like I said, I haven't really explored much else. I may be back later with more.
Dan I use IE and I am having the same problem with the ask to confirm.
MaryAnne - Thanks for listening and passing that on. I just want to be clear I am not opposed to being able to reply to comments. I actually like that ability. It is just the way that it is set up that I don't like and makes it very hard to follow the the comments.
MaryAnne
I have an idea. If Gather is going to leave the reply feature the way it is would it be possible to highlight the comments that were made since you last visited the page that way it would be easier to find them. Then have the page update the new comments every time you visit the page? I have seen that done on other sites. Would that be possible for Gather to do something like that? That way people who lite the feature the way it is could have it their way and those who hate it could use this to help them out?
there are some pros and some cons
Highlighting the last comment is a very excellent idea, making it easier to follow the flow of the comments. Other than that, in my opinion, I rather like this upgrade.
I did have problems boldfacing and italicizing some comments, but perhaps that is just a glitch to be corrected later.
Corrections! I had problems boldfacing and italicizing all my comments. Silly me! I just noticed the HTML in the bottom right hand of this box. Like this, right
It sort of helps when you take time to pay attention!!!
I don't like that my name is before my comment. I like it the other way, after all that is how you sign a letter. Your name at the end, makes me think that i am talking to myself.
Still waiting on the group the groups update.
The Conversation enhancements are very cool, but could you consider making the Submit button the active control if you hit Tab after entering a comment? If I have to reach over to the mouse to click Submit, it slows down a "chat"-type conversation considerably. Thanks.
Since I wasn't answered above, here goes again: (shows how "great" the new comment system is aye?)
Another question,
Why the past week [for popular/most views/most whatever content on explore tab]? What was the problem with having daily features/popular content? Something posted on say, Sunday might not be relevant come Friday afternoon. . .
And, what did you guys do with spell check? It was working in comments but now it isn't.
i too want my spell check back. thank you.
Please return names to the bottom of the comments. Thank you
WARNING: Turning off the email notification setting for when "someone replies to one of my comments" will cause your profile to be inaccessible and will prevent you from logging back into your account if you happen to log out. This is a known glitch that we are planning on fixing tomorrow, Friday May 21.
Until then, we advise that you keep this setting turned ON to prevent these problems. By the end of the day tomorrow, you should be able to turn this off with no negative effects on your account.
Likewise, any members who are currently experiencing this problem and are still logged in should go to their email preferences and make sure that that particular setting is checked off.
We appreciate your patience while we fix this glitch!
Yes, names at the <i>bottom</i> of comments made more sense.
...as did the ability to add minor HTML markup tags <i>while composing</i> a response.
Can we please remove the new features, and go back to the way it was?
Dan now you're in the realm of wishful thinking.
I have only one thing to say about last night's upgrade and I promise that I will make it short, okay??
The only new feature that I really dislike is the "Comment-Directly-To-A-Specific-Comment" feature.
Because I noticed something yesterday:
It does not work very well..............
If you are participating in a rather long and well-populated discussion thread and you leave a specific comment in response to another specific person's specific comment, by the time that specific person eventually gets back to that long and well-populated discussion thread, their specific comment and the specific comment that you made in response to it are both somewhere way up at the top of the discussion thread.
And, unless that specific person whose comment you responded to is willing to go all the way back up to the spot in the thread where you responded to their comment, then they probably will never even see or read the specific comment that you specifically left for their specific comment.
The "Comment-Directly-To-A-Specific-Comment" feature only works if the the specific person who wrote the specific comment that you are specifically responding to is either still participating in the thread or if they return to the thread relatively soon after you leave your specific comment in response to their specific comment.
Okay, I'm done.....................
I truly hate the way we know have to hit an html button everytime we wish to post a link. It's very annoying and makes it take much longer to reply to group posts.
When you moderate, it takes an extra half hour just because you have to keep hitting it on every single post.
Please get rid of this new, crappy feature.
Or I might just stop moderating or get rid of my group all together. It's too much of a hassle.
Angela--you don't have to open the HTML editor. You can highlight the words you want to turn into a link, click on the link sign, and insert the link the same way you would into an article. It's really quick.
Boy oh boy, I have just come on , I wonder if I will be able to get around or post something, clicked on your name from an old article to get here, I was wondering what the reply to this comment was for, I think I now know, best of luck with the upgrade.
I really like the functionality of the upgrade, and the additional of the little reply to this comment text at the bottom of replies adds a more interesting and organized look to threads, especially those with many replies.
Here's my feedback on the new release.
The "comment on a comment" feature is great, the not being able to find most popular articles is not, a lot of what I read here came from that list.
E3
I mostly like the new HTML options (once I figured out how to use them). It is easier to create a link, especially one with a mouseover. (Italics and bold takes about the same time, I think--and if you fail to hit CTRL+b at exactly the same time, your highlighted text will of course be replaced by a little b, and "undo" will not reverse the situation... This is easy to avoid by being careful and pressing CTRL ahead of time, especially if you're highlighting a longer stretch of text--once you know it can happen.)
As I said on Tom's article, it would be great if notifications on comments would take us to the comment itself on the thread, and it would be good to have a general "follow thread" button that would give us the option of being notified of any new comments on an article, not just the ones in reponse to our comments (and not just on our own articles).
My biggest problem with the "reply to comment" feature is that if a parent comment is deleted or removed, all the responses go with it (with a few rare exception that seem to happen if someone is replying at exactly the same time as the comment is removed). This is really problematic, especially considering how many people leave and delete their accounts with all their comments with it. I think it would be better to leave a removed/deleted comment marker in place and allow the reponses to stay.
I don't use the people page and the explore page very rarely, but I think the Gather Picks feature was nice in terms of representing worthy content other than "most popular" to the general public.
a simple rich text editor for the comment box would have been a lot easier to use and have created much less confusion than the separate window pop up thing.
I like the reply to comment boxes, but don't care for the HTML box. I don't see it as an improvement. We were using HTML before and it was simpler.
Ha! I just noticed the "follow this conversation by email" button. Sorry. :-)
(Dare I turn off notifications for replies to my comments to reduce the clutter? Will I be locked out of the site?)
Really like the Comment Reply! It's been useful already in keeping individual conversations grouped within a post. I can see where the other changes listed would be useful too.
:) wishing you laughter
