Grandmother Wisdom or Mumbo Jumbo rides again.
According to the 1972 novel by Ishmael Reed the words Mumbo Jumbo are derived linguistically from a variety of West African languages and translate to grandmother’s wisdom. Growing up, those of us who are fortunate enough to know their grandmothers are hopefully given the wisdom that goes with their experience. My own grandmother, Edith taught me
- Not to put the cart before the horse
- That a piece of bread can be used to remove excess salt from a dish
- And that Love can sometimes light the way
What did your grandmothers’ say to you? It would be wonderful to hear from my gather friends on this topic, please post each piece of wisdom separately. Thanks.

Grandmas are the best just ask my grandkids !
My grandma taught me to be myself and be proud of myself! She was a heavily religious person, loving and kind. She didn't judge people based on their outward appearance. I think this is what I learned most of all from her. Oh, and to work hard, and love your family always!
Anyway, my grandmother liked the way I looked people in the eye.
If the Baptist church didn't have a prayer meeting we would walk to the Pentecostal church.
She taught me to be kind to any one and not to judge by outward appearance.
I wish I had listened a little harder to what she has to say and ask questions more than I did.
~As long as you have eggs, flour, water and yeast and some vegetables growing in your garden you will always have a meal.
~The early bird gets the worm...(I think this applied not only to yard sales but also to gardening and starting one's day.)
My grandmother was NOT Christian, per se. I suspect she was something else, originating from Northern Italy, which is where she lived until the age of five or six. Let's just say she taught me a multitude of things that only I was privy to. She didn't really like anybody besides one friend or two and myself. This is not to say she was not content in her old age. I think she was. In her earlier years she was beautiful, exotic and something of a socialite.
Grandma Ramsey, "learn to count on yourself, you really can't count on anyone else".
