What happened to my Gather? 

 I have been a member on Gather for a long time {Member since: Nov 16, 2005} and this along with comment clipping and point hunting has screwed this forum. but this privatising really is out of line. go join Face Book if you want your privacy...

 

GATHER IS (was) A WRITERS FORUM!!! there are social networking sites available free of charge for all the social butterfly's out there.

this just plain sucks.

There are many groups on Gather, so I guess it is to each his or her own, but I'm put off by private posts, too. It makes me feel as if I'm intruding even to read the post. I'm a private person myself, but I wish there were a better way.

that it Dan you got it. when i was first invited to Gather it was By NPR. i'm a long time listener and when i came here it was real classy. but now? how can you say the best conversation if the conversation can be clipped or denied all together.

Gather is advertised as a social network for adults. It may have started out as a writers network but it has changed course a bit. I think Gather is big enough for all of us.

it is big enough, and in all theres years i never really complained, but this tag really pissed me off. in the never ending world of competition to be a social network for adults, Gather has become just another page on the web.
look at what Google has done for writers just think were we might be if Gather had gone in that direction.

I started from a link through NPR, too. I'm surprised that the public radio forum doesn't have more thought pieces on it. I'm one to talk, though, I only posted a clip from a dream I had.

There are many thoughtful and talented people on Gather, but also much light conversation between friends that don't like someone new chiming in. It's frustrating to see, but I think many are going elsewhere.

i get super frustrated when I can't comment! Why let me read your post if you don't want my comment? I get it, your pissed about something so you post it, but don't just let your friends comment because you're worried about some harsh words! you could comment on my post that you wanted to dump a big steaming load of crap on my face and I would still read your posts if I thought they were interesting. why do people care so much?!!

Maybe it's just because I have no feelings for people to hurt...

i'm not all that pissed at the person who blocked comments, heck it might not have even been worth reading.

what got my dander up, was that The Gather Team is giving options to members that in the end undermine the "Best Conversation" motto.
how can i recommend it to anyone? its just a farce.

I have seen this a lot lately.

I guess people are just adament about no one disagreeing with them.

I've been a member less than a year, and thought that exclusion was part of the game. It seems mostly to be those of a certain political viewpoint who don't want anyone giving them a different (better?) slant on the world. So be it! They don't listen anyway, just insult you and show their ignorance. Who needs that?!?

I think the team acts when compaints are made, but many people seem to either agree with the nasty comments, or let the person know they are out of line without reporting them. I have read a couple of comments where people have mentioned they have been reported.
The rules are very clear. I suppose the Gather team can't read all posts all the time.

Actually Darren, it is a copyright infringers haven and a point whore site... LOL Some of us can handle the contrarian opinions (like yours on my copyright posts!) and don't even have to delete the people that don't agree with them! I can dish it, but I also can take it!

I've read few a few posts and get to the bottom where it says "So and so only allows friends to comment." Then I'm aggravated that I even gave them a view if they aren't interested in my comments. I don't stay connected to anyone who does that.

Why do people care so much? Why shouldn't they?

What I mean is, some people are assailed by the most horrid comments -- comments not even on topic much less meant for public consumption in any context.

*I* haven't had that problem yet, but if I do ever have a problem with someone using articles of mine as a dumping ground for their excess hormones ... I might also take Gather up on the option of blocking or allowing only friends to comment. Or at least select the option to "approve" comments before posting them.

It's a good thing. It's not an opinion-blocking thing; it's a garbage-blocking thing for most of em I'd guess.

That drives me nuts too. I'll read something, and be thinking about what I want to say; then they only let friends comment.
