Well November's musical forecast seems very mix & match, smidge o'this, smatter of that. Sort of a doldrums of seasonal shift? Theories abound. So here's what I'm sorta listening to:
On the home front. Although I have long harbored a terrific on-again off-again crush on Linda Ronstadt (What?! What. ever. Go admit to your own musical crushes publicly, it ain't always easy.) I hadn't heard "Adieu False Heart", her folky and cajuny album with Ann Savoy. The word "bittersweetness" keeps coming up in online descriptions, and that's about right. It has sad old songs, Linda singing in Franch, a strange-but-not-unpleasant cover of Walk Away Renee, and just enough soft fret squeaks to make me happy.

Also grinding on the iPod at home: Portishead's "Dummy" Don't trip out on all that atmosphere. If you haven't heard it, it is the sound of the mid-nineties.
Mixing it up with the "Beautiful Boy mix" from friendly Nicole. She's young, in pleasant love with a gentleboy named Dominic, and inspired in general. Nicole assembled the rundown for her sweetie, but gave up the playlist publicly to share the joy. I'm not being sassy, it really is that good. I should list the artists & songs because I'm calling it the "Oh-my-fan-myself-mix." Some highlights include "Surround Me with Your Love" by Hotel Costes and Handsome Boy Modeling School's "I've Been Thinkin'" (w/ Cat Power!)
What I have stacked on deck to listen to is probably more interesting to y'all:
- Bettye LaVette's "The Scene of the Crime," (hat tip Musicheads!)
- A belated spin of the "Heavy Rotation - Summer 2007" mix from a dear and long distance friend.
- Someone keeps mentioning the new Dan Wilson album. Fine. Fine!
You know the routine: Share what you're listening to here and I’ll try it, if only via online preview and we'll all discover something new.

And a ton more, it depends on my mood - but thats whats played in the past few hours for me - well, stuff that's played that I care to acknowledge listening to (I won't mention any of the Richard Cheese I've heard today hehe)
Details, Ashley, details. Which album? Which songs? Which reasons do you listen?
No. Sleep. Til Brooklyn! Ponce you're after my headphones this month, with the Beasties and Prince both. Add away, mister.
I am a huge Oasis fan..
And yes, the new Dan Wilson is darned good!
New Songs for the Bus on November 5th. I'm hoping to score a Doobie Brothers CD from the library so I can listen to 92 Subaru and China Grove back to back.
Heya! Shouldn't you have the Spjork anthology "Brown the Meat" on your MP3?
Sweet suggestion, Susan, but I'm still coming down (or crawling out of) whatever cold/flu I've been battling. Sneaking down to any pub is limited by my lung capacity and temperature! For those of you who didn't catch Susan's articles about Lucky Dube, check out Lucky Dube murdered and Lucky Dube, a review. The review is esp. good writin', and I need to comment there.
"My headphones are busted, so I've been listening to the Current all day." - Frick Wha? Like, it is on but you can't hear it? Nice. ;-) In all seriousness I'm looking forward to the next installment of Songs for the Bus.
Matt & Shannon Heaton , A Fine Winter's Night

Claire Lynch, Crowd Favorites
Eric Merrill, Western Star

Cathie Ryan, The Farthest Wave
The Greencards, Viridian

Ingrid Michaelson (you know the if you're chilly, here take my sweater song from the jcpenney commercial?) which led me to
Thea Ennen (another folksinger)
Lang Lang (pianist): Dragon Songs
Minnie Driver
I love these threads where you can learn about artists you might otherwise miss.
'Fires At Midnight'--Blackmore's Night--gotta check them out. The interesting thing is this is Deep Purple's Richie Blackmore! Renaissance music. very nice.
'Stiff Kittens'--Blaqk Audio---side project of AFI's Davey Havok & Jade Puget.
'My Defender'--Mesh---This guy has an interesting voice and style of singing
'Benzin'--Rammstein (you knew I was going to mention them!) About the world's dependency on gasoline (benzin
'Some Walls'--Peter Paul & Mary--this song made me cry a little.
Coheed and Cambria - NWFT..not in the same league as their last record, and the praise it's received among some has me scratching my head. But
The Appleseed Cast Saw them live..loved some of it; the new stuff included.
Battles upcoming show has motivated me to try and get more into them.
Ours, The Dear Hunter, Circa Survive - the 1st 2 I am big fans of..I may checkout CS and try once more. But these 3 bands playing live is a big reason why I'll be listening to them this month.
Men, Women And Children & Under the Influence of Giants - MWC are playing here soon and I saw UtIoG's music on the cbs sitcom "The Big Bang Theory" last week. I do like about 4 cuts on this one a lot. The rest is kinda filler or just ok, but nothing amazing.
Avenged Sevenfold ..their new album I have yet to hear, but I am checking out WAKING THE FALLEN..the previous disc to their last CITY OF EVIL. I really dig a lot of WTF. They do have some good chops on that disc and the vocals started to come out more.
Menomena show coming up soon with Illinois. "Friend And Foe" has grown a bit on me.
Do Make Say Think Concert got me into them. They are better live from my impressions. Helps I am a new Broken Social Scene fan.
A whole boatload of Al Di Meola last week..his new record is gonna smoke I have a feeling. Acoustic, Italian, Spanish builds into shredding. Al in 2008 FTW!
Minus the Bear - PLANET OF ICE..finally they stepped up to a level I can dig them. This album has 4 or 5 songs that are possibly better than anything else they ever did. The concert last week inspired me.
Nomia local act I am supportive of. One of the best Post-Rock bands in town.
Empires played a show with Nomia and I really dug them. Post-Metal of a sort. I think once I get more into bands like Pelican and Isis my interest will be even higher in them.
The new progressive Tech/Death Metal exploration:
Nile I'm really digging
The Faceless maybe even moreso
Behemoth..with the oncoming show this Tuesday, I'm trying to crash-course with them.
Gojira same thing as Behemoth..similar style of intense brutality.
Between the Buried And Me - still addictied to them. More of their backcatalog now tho. ALASKA I really like a lot.
Emperor..the jury is still out until I hear more and better quality recordings.
Textures found a used copy of their newest disc at The Fetus.
Giant liked them opening for BTBAM
The End would have liked them opening for BTBAM, still dig their album even tho their guitar played left.
Thurisaz not as brutal or even technical as I realized, but the melodies still work well. Too bad they played in Chicago last April when I wouldn't have cared or knew them. Also a reunited Atheist as well was there..o the regrets
In Vain still digging their 2007 disc "The Latter Rain." a lot. Needs a bit more time, but these guys truly made a statement with it. The only thing ya gotta wonder is why so little knowledge or distribution of it.
The Darkest Hour - not sure if I will dig this band ultimately.
Revisiting:
Devin Townsend Band - OCEAN MACHINE and TERRIA.."Earth Day" may be one of the 10 best progressive Metal songs ever.
Evergrey - "In Search of Truth" something inspired me to listen to this the other day. "Mark of the Triangle" is still a classic and this album I don't feel still has a bad song on it..
Mastodon..at The Fetus I found a used copy of BLOOD MOUNTAIN. With my recent revelation with Metal, I may discover more to like with this band.
Orphaned Land listening to 2004's MABOOL for the 1st time in a long time. The vocals don't bother me at all anymore. Cannot wait to hear the Steven Wilson-produced follow-up sometime early next year likely.
Opeth - THE ROUNDHOUSE TAPES..need to hear a better recording, but this one probably has caught me along with others offguard.
Serj Tankian/SOAD played his new stuff along with some SOAD material a few weeks back. I think I enjoy System more than his new one..more cohesive I suppose. But his record should be on my list by the end of the year.
Protest the Hero need to give these guys another shot.
Now that Christmas is coming up I'll be getting that music out. I love Mariah Carey's, Christina Aguilera's, Josh Groban's, 98 Degrees', and TransSiberian Orchestra's Christmas albums.
My taste really varies. I listen to a lot of jazz, classical, rock and anything that sounds like the mood I'm in at the time.
May be the most eclectic yet. Or not.. You decide

I lent some CD s to a friend and got into a nostalgia kick of some old favorites. Jimi Hendricks is on the Current now covering Bob Dylan. How does it feel? To be on your own. A complete unknown. A good friday, and not a bad week.
I want to rent Control, a newer Movie about Joy Division, and Ian Curtis. It is not yet available on net flix. It got very good reviews, and awards in the UK, 2007 I think.
I rented Walk the Line, and A Neil Gaiman movie, Stardust with Robert Deniro, and Michelle Pfeiffer. I have read all his books, and he now lives in or near St Louis Park. Very creative individual. I have a Dead show, Widespread Panic, New Order Biopic, A Clash movie, Repo Man(a great Punk Soundtrack), Once, and The Cure in my Q. mostly familiar territory. I should try to get into the music of this decade. The SXSW Broadcast was great.
