Ever wish you could journey around the globe? Travelers - and Minnesotans - Pat & Ali are doing just that. Learn about taking a trip around the world!

October 08, 2007 03:53 PM EDT (Updated: October 10, 2007 09:52 AM EDT)

Many of us daydream about taking that brave step out of our daily work to sail around the world, or drive around the world, or who knows, maybe even compete in a cross-country classic car race. Pat & Ali don't just dream, they do all these things...and share their adventures online.

The native Minnesotans spent nearly four years sailing around the world, then tried their skill at The Great American Race this past summer, and then on September 21, 2007, Pat & Ali departed the Land of 10,000 Lakes in a 1958 VW Bus to drive around the world.

How do they do it? What insight can they share with armchair travelers?

Pat & Ali joined MPR, Gather, and their own fans here Tuesday October 9, 2007 at 8 pm ET / 7 pm CT / 5 pm PT for an online Q&A. They agreed to check back in on this discussion before Tuesday October 16, so it isn't too late to post a question!

Is there one thing you miss most about "home" while traveling? And is there one thing you try to seek out as you're traveling -- best onion rings, funniest locals, coolest ice cream parlor?

Hi Bums!
Do you think you will ever live aboard a sailboat again, or do you feel you've "been there, done that?" If you can't get anyone to pay what you think Bum is worth, will you just keep the boat, restore her to a seaworthy condition and perhaps keep her in, say, the Bahamas for future use?

I first found your site about 6 months ago, missed you in Searcy, Arkansas for Great American Race. I hadn't made it that far in reading your site. My question is.. Do you plan to write a book on your travels? Your Journeys would make for a great movie. Have you considered this or had any offers to do either?

Hi everyone. Thanks for welcoming us here tonight.

Caryn,

Actually, over time, "home" has sort of become wherever we happen to be at the time. We always call Minnesota home, but also don't really have a problem calling "home" a boat or a bus either.

And yes, we always keep our eyes peeled for pizza when on the road. It's a must. And surprisingly it's everywhere!

Best pizza, not surprisingly was in Italy. Naples in fact. I tried to set a record for most meals in a row. I made it about nine, before Ali started to fade on me and we had to switch to pasta.

Christina,

To answer the question about money. I was a commodities trader in Chicago. So while Ali paid the bills I went to work and risked it all. Fortunately it all worked out well for us.

We're not retired though and will have to go back to work someday. We don't worry about it though. We feel like we could live on a lot less these days. Our lives have simplified a bit.

Hi Kathryn,

You'd think there would be a lot more difficulties in sailing around the world, but they really seemed few and far between. We had some problems with the boat that ended up costing us a lot of money that was unexpected, but we were able to get past that. As for weather, we really didn't run in to any big storms. If you follow the seasons and keep an eye on the forecasts the water out there tends to be flat more often than it is scary.

Malcolm,

We've sort of learned that more often than not a friendly smile and patience can get us through most border crossings no problem. We've decided to just wing it like that in the bus as well. If we absolutely can't get in to a country, we'll just turn around and go to the next one.

Hi Susan,

I think what we've found is that people tend not to do these things because they think they can't afford it. But in reality if you are willing to downsize things, sell off a lot of "possessions", and just go for it, that it can be done. Maybe not for years and years, but a few months of travel is certainly possible if you really want it.

Hey Bob,

Envy. I don't know exactly. Generally people seem happy just to share in our adventures. I think most people were genuinely excited to hear that we were going to continue on our adventures as they didn't want the story to end.

Possessions. Ali and I have become masters at NOT overpreparing. We may have packed a bit too much at the beginning of the sailing adventure, but by the end we would just pop in to a grocery store an hour before taking off to sail three weeks across an ocean. As for the VW, we haven't even filled our cabinets yet, and we've still got an empty rack on the top as well. We are traveling light now. Back home in MN we've got one small closet filled with high school yearbooks and the like, but that's it. Everything we own could fit in this bus.

Ali and I started thinking about the road trip about a year ago and knew we wanted to keep it simple. A lot of people seem to think we should have taken off in an RV, but we really wanted something that we could drive through downtown Mexico City, or Rio, or wherever, parallel park it and walk around town. We didn't want some huge flashy machine that would make us stand out too terribly. Granted the bus we ended up with does look pretty flashy, but hey, this is what they drive south of the border. Not to mention spare parts shouldn't be hard to come by. By the time we head across the oceans with the bus she should be much more worn in.

We're not really sure how long we're going to take to drive around the world. With sailing, we really had to follow the seasons. With driving we're much more free to just go when we want to go. This trip could take one year, it could take ten. We're looking forward to relaxing and seeing for ourselves.

Hi Jack,

Will we live aboard again? No, we really don't think so. We gave sailing a chance, but it never really grew on us. We loved the adventure of it, but sailing around the world was a goal we set for ourselves, it was never meant to be a lifestyle for us.

We nearly always purchase a Lonely Planet guidebook before we visit a country. It gives us a good idea of what we'd like to make sure we don't miss. But we also really try to get away from it and do our own thing as well.

Near term travel schedule is to head south. Baja is where we're sort of excited to get to first. We're looking forward to being at the beach again, surfing, hanging out in small towns and getting some of our Spanish back. Our only real commitment at this point is to run in the Great Race again in May of 08. We're really looking forward to that. We'll fly back from wherever we are at the time to participate.

Well, we've found that we have the most amazing experiences when we put ourselves in positions that we at first feel uncomfortable. In Yemen we found ourselves wandering around an area of the city that we sort of knew we shouldn't be. We got a little nervous until we were walking by a group of young guys on the street playing foosball. And guess what, they stopped us and asked us to play. We ended up having a great time and lots of laughs. http://www.bumfuzzle.com/Pages/2006/2006_03.html

No, the Porsche is definitely the right car for this sort of race. It's not about speed, but acceleration and cornering still come in very handy. Two things the bus does not have at all.

In Haiti, we found ourselves surrounded by humanity. It was just shoulder to shoulder mayhem as far as we could tell. When we first arrived we found a "bus" to where we were going and really got hassled by the driver. We eventually got where we were going, but for the first time we really had to think about if we should be there. Yet, we ventured out the next day, climbed to a mountaintop fortress, talked with the locals, and by the last day we had no problem in arguing with a taxi driver over a two dollar cab fare in front of hundreds of people at a bus station.

There really isn't too much to the van. Inside we've got a small sink with 15 gallons of water, a small refrigerator, and a bed that folds out. It's really pretty simple, not even a radio. The engine is a 1600cc with a whopping 40 hp, that gets us cruising easily at 55 but not much more. We've also got heavy duty shocks, and disc brakes.

What were the biggest seas that you guys came across in Bum and for how long (other than entering the river) and what was the fastest wind speed?

Egypt was amazing. By then we were pretty experienced travelers and were able to handle the cat calls reasonably well, though they did even get to us after a while. The country itself though is great, seeing all of these sights up close and personal is not to be missed. We try and tell everyone to visit there. We spent 11 days in Cairo waiting for a boat part and started to feel like we lived there. Like we were in downtown Chicago or something.

Hey Susan,

I do the driving of the Bus, while Ali handles the driving of the Porsche. By the time she's done with the race she just wants to sit in the van and enjoy the scenery again.

We try to visit website friends as often as we can. Around the world we stayed with people we'd only met through our website in Australia, Israel, Canada, and all over the place. Meeting people has been the best thing about the website.

Great Stories, Great Inspiration. Two quick questions re: Circumnavigation. Why did you choose a Cat vs Monohull? What books/reference guides did you use to help plan your trip? (and the 3rd - Paul Theroux talks about the Non Traveler projecting their fears onto those who do or intend to travel. My wife and I are avid travelers, but I have read stories about bandits (and yes Pirates) around the Yemen coast - Did you hear about that or experience anything that concerned you) sorry for being longwinded.....

I'm sorry I missed this--was at class. Interestingly, my next-door-neighbors just returned from their trip around the world, returning last Saturday. They'll be giving us all a slide show sometime soon.

If you have a question for Pat & Ali, don't hesitate to add it here, they've promised to check back in and share their replies.

Hey Susan, I'm sorry you missed it too. How long were your neighbors gone?

Thought you might be, Greg. Glad you swung by.

Dreaming might be how it starts, Nan!

My neighbors were traveling for an entire year! The wife is from the Czech Republic, so they already had international experience. A side note: they rented their home for six months to a family from France. I ended up spending most afternoons over there drinking tea and learning French. Since I'd only been a self-taught student, the experience was rich and memorable. I'm planning my own visit to France next spring.

I love that travel can be contagious! What a terrific time for them...and ultimately for you. In a way France came to visit :-) Were your neighbors on a sabbatical or mini-retirement?

The regular neighbors are younger than me and just did it. Off they went around the world.

The French neighbors came over so that the husband could teach mathematics at the University and their two young boys (matched in age to my boys) could attend school here.
