Irene who wasn't Leon's wife
who may have been from Costa Rica
crocheted a Christmas mouse
with a gray stitch tail
disappeared shortly after
the New Year
Nerdy Mr. C
the least popular science teacher
who gave too much homework
had a head like ripe honeydew
died lymphomic
lonely as he'd lived
Gerhardt from Germany
the elephant tender who spoke
broken english said a girl so pretty
should have an extra ride
ran away from the circus
soon ran back
Grandfather David
glimpsed only barely
an island in a sea of tubes
and machines that signaled
hello
goodbye
hello

See it any way you want -
What I'm seeing is a picture book for those between middle school and end-of-life; a book about as big as the palm of the hand, with one life-sketch per page, with a line drawing or photgraph on its facing page.
Another seeing - of a reading of this, with meditative/expressive/interpretive musical interludes between each character.
With a few more character life-capsule sketches, perhaps an underlying storyline would emerge.....
All this by way of saying, you've a wonderful gift of relevant observation.
And Joe who always,
always said 'if', followed
by 'if only' I had or
'why not me?'
The bus drove off,
Joe standing at the curb
looking for a ticket
already in his hand.
