I like Jim Rantz. He's a down-to-earth, classic guy who tells it like it is. He has been farm director of the Minnesota Twins for about as long as most fans of the current generation have been watching the club. What I like most about Rantz is that he picks players who are great people along with being great athletes. Even when he picks up a few larger egos, like Boof Bonser, they blend, and even relax a bit, in the more low-key world of the Twins.
Rantz has done a lot to shape the Twins into a consistent contender. They have one of the deepest farm systems in baseball, and are turning out a generation of stars right now that are great players and class acts. Were that there were 29 more farm systems like the Twins.
One of my writers, Jim Mandelaro, wrote a great piece on Rantz' induction into the Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame. It's great reading and, if you're a Minnesota fan, you might want to know who is the man behind players like Kirby Puckett.
