Draft Day Approaches

Draft day is fast approaching. Friday March 31 for me. I'm in a weird league this year through MLB and "The Sporting News."

It seems to be a cumulative points league which should be easy. Just look at the total points from last year and draft.

Of course, that would tend to lead to an unbalanced team with a heavy influence on pitching. Starting pitchers are always risky it seems. Plus, I really like to "pitch and ditch". I'll probably have problems with max innings this year as this is the first time that I'll have a team for the whole season.

So, I'm going to have fun. I've got the third pick, so I'll pick a stud. A-Rod and Pujols will probably go first. My pick will be, Vlad. He's done nothing this spring to make me not think he might be due for an MVP season.

After that, I'm going to go "on the come". It always seems that a lot of players peak at age 28-30. So that's who I'm looking for. Five tool players in that age range. Even Guerrero fit's the design.

Being a San Diego Padres fan is a real detriment to owning a fantasy team. But having a player or two on your favorite team makes it more exciting.

Anyways, back to draft central, I have more scouting reports to analyze.

For those Bosox fans that are so prevalent here, Mark Loretta will be a great addition to the team.

Tomorrow is the big day for the Granite State League. I have done very little research . . . so I guess it is best available, with an eye on the infield. Short stop seems to be the only infield position in the AL with some depth.

the pitch and ditch, always a tricky one to pull off . . . I have Sparky Anderson's disease, I hold on to people too long.

You've lost me Stephen. I don't understand about half the terms you use : "MLB", "a cumulative points league", "pitch and ditch", "max innings", "on the come" and "tool players."

I'm not sure but I think I'm glad.

We speak in strange terms Carl. MLB major league baseball. Cumulative points is a scoring system to determine how well your team is doing. I could go on but you'd probably just want to be shot. It's my second year of fantasy baseball, I had always avoided it but now I can hardly get enough. Thank God I dont have to work for a living

Jim, pitch and ditch works as long as there arent many in your league doing it. I'm shooting for 3 regular starters and fill the rest on a game by game basis. If others are doing it, then you hold on to someone cause you might not get them back later. The league I'm in is a ten team mixed al/nl which helps.

Albert Pujols is my idea of the perfect ballplayer. Supposedly, he could have been a Padre at one time. What fools.

The draft was held today, not too shaby, but not that great (no one did great)

All I know, is that I looked up and most of the good outfielders were gone. They aren't important, right?

You know, I never really followed the drafting part of sports period. Then again, I am not a big fan of college sports but I guess that is just me! i am glad that it is once again time for some athletic diversion, I think we all could use that!

I myself don't follow college sports (partly because I went to a tiny college that didn't have sports till my Junior year) - the draft I was talking about, however, was my fantasy baseball draft. Nine teams, five people auto drafted. That makes for some interesting decesions.

I was interested in Podsednik, and I knew he was going to go soon, because of the Auto Drafters. It was too soon to take him though, so I had to pass. Peralta was also going to be picked before I was ready, and missed out on him as well.

Your title caught my attention because I thought that you were writing about a military draft. With all this talk about blowing up Iran, it makes a young buck like me kind of nervous. I'm glad that you're talking about sports...
