planted my eboxes with tomatoes, bell and hot peppers and cukes. I wanted to give you an update on this July 4th here in northern Michigan on how my plants are doing. They are twice the size of the plants planted at the same time that are in the garden. Here's a linka to the "how-to" article on building your own eboxes.
I don't think it's too late in some areas of the country, but keep it in mind for next year's deck planting.

I'll have to try bothways next year as an experiment.
Jeez! If I only had access to sunlight.{sigh}
I have milky-clear storage boxes that I haven't thrown away despite broken bottom corners. Aha - perfect for the innards of your design. I suspect those wouldn't work for the outer box, though, because it would probably heat up too much. I have beige boxes with red lids that I purchased at Target and/or Sears years ago. Holiday storage boxes at numerous stores come in dark green with red lids. Those commercial earthboxes are dark green, as I recall.
For ease in cutting the holes, I wonder about using an old glue gun or soldering iron to melt the cutting lines. Do it outdoors, of course, due to fumes and potential flames. Instead of buying a pond basket, I'd try to cut slits in a round plastic icecream tub or gallon milk jug.
