If I were to attach a title to this essay, I would probably choose "The Odyssey." I believe that my journey through academia has proven to be quite an odyssey, filled with the kind of twists and turns you might find in an epic tale. Also, my path to educational progress is far from complete. However, with concerted effort, the benefit of my own personal support team, and some financial aid, I believe that I can rise above my current circumstances and achieve both my educational and professional goals.
Perhaps the word that would best describe my circumstances is "challenging." My first challenge is the disability and debilitating illness I face in the form of sickle cell anemia. At times, sickle cell has won the day, leaving me weak and exhausted. My academic progress has sometimes been severely hampered by the periodic attacks which are a consequence of my illness. Equally disconcerting is how little instructors, bosses, and colleagues seem to know about the disease. As a result, I have had to fight ignorance as well as illness as I attempt to persevere, despite the physical, mental, and emotional challenges which sickle cell anemia represents.
My circumstances also bear the mark of a challenging home life. As a single mother of two, I often feel as if I'm being pulled in two different directions. Each day I must juggle breakfast and books, play clothes and PowerPoint presentations. The minute I feel that the home front is under control, another skirmish erupts between my two girls and I must play peacekeeper once again. The absence of a mate means that I must handle domestic chores on a solo basis; my support must come from friends and from above.
In addition, I face the continuing challenge of financial hardship. I wonder at times how I will be able to handle medical bills, child care bills, grocery bills, and tuition. Sometimes, the financial burden of raising two children and attending classes seems overwhelming. As the sole breadwinner in my household, I face the additional stress of having to pay all bills on my own.
Yet, while my circumstances may seem difficult, I have a realistic, achievable plan to rise above them. I am aggressively treating my sickle cell anemia and am doing all I can medically and nutritionally to keep my condition under control. I have established an effective routine for my girls and have obtained reliable child care help. A support network consisting of friends and relatives has helped keep peace on the homefront. I am also engaging in aggressive financial planning in order to keep my financial house in order. In addition, I am seeking financial aid to help me cope with college costs.
The fact is, my circumstances have been challenging for quite some time. Yet, despite the odds, I have managed to maintain a caring, nurturing home for my children. I have steadily progressed up the career ladder and am poised to pursue a career in management. With dedication and determination, I believe I can also realize my goal of teaching at the collegiate level. My personal and professional life may be a work in progress, but I believe that I am well on my way to becoming the mother, the working professional, and the community volunteer I have been called to be.
