It’s always fun running into old friends, especially those who you aren’t even sure why you lost touch!
This morning when I was descending onto the Long Island Railroad platform, I ran into Maggie. Maggie immigrated to the U.S. from Poland with her mother when we were in 2nd grade and we had been friends throughout high school. We went off to college, Maggie to Fordham and I to Northeastern. We spoke occasionally on IM however have not actually spent any time together since graduating. We completely lost touch a couple of years ago when our schedules just didn’t match.
So I ran into Maggie this morning and we caught up on our commute into work. It’s amazing what you find out about people from your past when you run into someone! Maggie graduated from Fordham and is now working for the MTA as a paralegal. She is thinking about going to graduate school to get her masters in Business Administration. Her family moved out to Port Jefferson after high school graduation.
She relayed a lot of cool information about people I used to be friends with and lost touch with:
- Emily graduated from Skidmore with a degree in English. She worked at Barnes and Noble store by our home for a couple of years however is now tutoring at one of those learning centers that always advertise on television (Huntington, Sylvan, etc). In high school, she got a bunny as a pet (I helped name it Missy) and Maggie informed me that Emily and her mother have started a rabbit rescue. Apparently, many people get rabbits at the pet store without realizing the responsibility and care that comes with it. They tend to abandon them and of course the rabbits can’t survive. Emily and her mom, an anasteseolist, care for the rabbits until they are healthy and then put them up for adoption. Emily’s brother Michael is in college now (I couldn’t believe it because I remember him from when he was little)!
- Valerie graduated from Nassau Community College with an associates degree and then went to NYU for one semester. She hated it. Based on what I remember of her, she was probably lazy and did not want to do the work required and the caliber school that is NYU. Anyway…she was working at Cosi part time and now she is working as a secretary at a law firm with no undergraduate degree from a 4-year school. Her sister is trashy and dances in hip hop music videos for 50 Cent and others.
- Lindsey graduated from NYU with a degree in English literature and communications and has been in Africa for 2 years teaching English to the underprivileged. WOW! I was astonished because she was never a selfless person. This is probably a good thing for her!
I also relayed information to her!
- Amy graduating from Binghamton with a degree in human development and is currently going to Columbia for her masters in social work. Ideally she wants to be a school social worker. She just moved into an upper east side luxury apartment building with two girls from her program, although ahead of her in the program.
- Pia graduated from U of Rochester and decided, because of a scholarship to go to RIT for graduate school. She wants to be a school psychologist. She hated RIT, not realized that life without a strong Jewish community, and the friends she had during her undergraduate program would affect her time there. She has transferred to, and will be starting her first term, at Columbia in a couple of weeks. She’ll be moving into campus housing next week.
- Nicole transferred from Nassau Community College after a few years there and is now at Queens College. She isn’t 100% sure what she wants to do but she may be moving to California to be with a guy she recently met who seems to be “the one.”
We updated one another on our families and our own lives as well. It was fun and it was nice to catch up and we decided we would communicate on Facebook and try to get together. Since we are on Long Island, it is silly not to spend time with one another!
