The Traveler - John Twelve Hawks
This is the first in a series (I doubt I'll read the others)
Using current technology tweaked a bit into what it can become in the future, this author creates a very scary thriller.
There are Travelers who, by some genetic quirk, can visit other realms. They often come back with amazing spiritual insights and often become spiritual leaders. There are Harlequins who are vowed to protect them with both high-tech and low-tech weapons. These bodyguards (both men and women) have no feelings and just work on instinct, training and hair trigger violence.
In a great way this book reminded me of the Matrix movies - the man against the machine. There is also a resemblance to 1984 - Big Brother is always watching.
This is clearly a post 9-11 book - all the fears about terrorism covering the fact that the government can watch our every move.
It was exciting and scary. A bit too much so for me
The Return to Light - Dia Calhoun
This was a small fable about a Christmas tree. Sweet, tear jerker. Not especially good. It's supposed to be for kids, but I usually like kid books.
I can't really recommmend it.
