John Grisham's latest novel, Playing for Pizza, is the first book I've read in a matter of days in quite some time (not counting Make Way for Ducklings and other such works). Parenting and work have definitely combined to slow down my pace of pleasure reading!
I enjoy reading Grisham's legal thrillers, but this one takes sports rather than the law as its theme. The main character, Rick Dockery, comes to the end of his NFL career as a third string quarterback in a painful and embarrassing way. He manages to be convinced by his agent to accept an offer to play for the Parma Panthers in the fledgling Italian "football americano" league. The fast paced book tells the tale of Rick's triumphs and travails there. The amazing food of Italy is an important supporting character in this one; Grisham descirbes Rick's introduction to the multi-course extraganzas there quite well.
For a quick entertaining read this summer, this is one good choice.
