I don't read a lot of fantasy, but I do read a lot of teen literature (as a former young adult librarian). I just finished reading the book, Twilight by Stephenie Meyer and it will go on record as one of my favorite YA books!
When Bella's Mom begins to travel with her new husband, Bella goes to live with her father in Forks, Washington on the Olympic Peninsula. Bella has always hated Forks because it's dark and rainy and there is nothing to do there. Her first few days of high school in Forks is ok, marred only by the hostile behavior of her Biology lab partner, Edward. He acts like he can't get away from her fast enough. When Edward rescues her from being run over by a truck in the school parking lot, his attitude starts to change toward her and she is fascinated by his good lucks and incredible charm. As Bella and Edward spend more time together, they both realize that their growing love puts Bella in grave danger.
Meyer's debut novel is a masterpiece of well-developed characters and intriguing plotline. Teen readers will identify with Bella's efforts to fit in with her peers in a new high school and with her attraction for Edward. Adults and teens alike will be riveted by the story and will be unable to put the book down until the very last page.
