I don't usually go in for what I term Housewife Porn, but sometimes a cute title does sucker me into it. Such is the case with Michele Beardsley's I'm the Vampire, That's Why! Don't get me wrong here, this book does not fall squarely into the aforementioned genre, but it does skirt the edges on a regular basis.
My expectations going into this one were of a fun, comedic romp through the life of a PTA mom turned vampire. That is sorta what I did get, but not to the extent I wanted. I mean it was a fantastic premise, and quite frankly I wish I'd thought of it myself. Alas, Beardsley took the great idea and turned it into something less than it could have been.
It is not, however, a total loss.
The book is about an everyday kinda mom with kids in school. She's on the PTA, as are all of her friends in this small community. Slowly, they all get turned into vampires. Beardsley has a nice sarcastic edge to her writing, which tickled me to no end. In fact, she writes very much the way I do… in a very personal kind of way. Like she is relating events to a friend, and she pulls no punches with the caustic remarks. I love her for that.
Where she lost it is that it seems she forgot what kind of book she wanted to write. Either that or she caved to the mass-market demands. Whatever the reason, she caters to the lowest common denominator by inserting endless sex. Well, ok, she puts in incidents of almost sex, and she does it over and over and over again. It drove me nuts, and not in a cold shower kinda way.
So. I am going with an ok 3 out of 5 stars for I'm the Vampire, That's Why! The book was very fun for the most part, I just wish she had kept to the snark and stayed out of the sex. We got the point the first time she broached it, she didn't have to keep going through the same motions ad nauseum. Recommended, but just skip the pseudo-sex scenes.

Still very readable and enjoyable though.
Doesn't sound very appealing to me. Anyway, right now I'm reading "Geek Love" and enjoying every twisted sentence. ;-)
It rises above all the Harlequin crap, but she did come dangerously close to joining that ilk. Shame. It was a good book, but it could have easily been great in her hands if she had let it.
I pop in now and again to approve things for my groups... or deny them, but that's about it.
