Some unnamed but nasty sorts who did not mind me issuing stamps to commemorate the passing of
Bob Denver, Pope John Paul or Prince Reinier took issue with the Justice Rehnquist stamp that was distributed to the Artistamp freebies group after his death.
Obviously not everyone had a mother that told them that it's not polite to bite the hand that feeds them - or at least provides them with free stamps on a regular basis.
Here's the thing. In my view, anyone who
- graduated first in their Law School class,
- was warmly regarded by people on both sides of the aisle here in Washington, and
- quipped to a reporter: "that's for me to know and you to find out,"
In any case, the man is dead. In fact all those men are dead but you know what I mean.
I figure being dead should make pretty much anyone less prone to being hated, but apparently that's not the case.
I've come to the conclusion that I'm better off not having my artistamp work - or probably not much else of my work - followed by anyone who would object to commemorating a life.
I mean after all, most of this sort of work is done in a very lighthearted manner - with a few commemoratives thrown in in a bow to philately tradition. And beyond that, repaying a kindness with negative comments is just plain nasty.

I had a hard time finding the logic in your complaint, and chose this line as an example. I don't understand how death changes anything about how a person lived - and the life is the point of the commemoration. Those who had no respect for this man while alive, should have the same opinion of him after death. That would be an honest opinion. I'm having a hard time figuring out why anyone would want to honor a person who quipped something as childish and rude as : "that's for me to know and you to find out," to a reporter.
Because the purpose of your article was to criticize others for criticizing, I don't think you made that point, or the points of your defense of Rehnquist very well. Maybe your emotions hadn't settled before you wrote this. I offer only these comments, and not a rating, so I will have the option to increase the rating if you rewrite it with a better argument.
