I don't know why he responds the way he does.
He knows I'm not after him.
I don't want him.
I don't need him.
If I did need him, I'd call. He'd come. It might take some coaxing, but he'd come. I know that.
Still, he sits at a distance and looks at me suspiciously.
He changes his stance at times. Comes closer then moves away.
He pretends to sleep. To Dream. But all the while, he's aware I'm here.
He Watches me carefully, wondering what I'm about. He keeps tabs as I go about doing what I do.
I'm content to let him stay where he is, far from reach and let him pretend that I don't know that he's watching me through half closed eyes.
As suddenly as I started it all, I stop. Wind up the cord and put the vacuum cleaner in the hallway closet.
As if by magic, things are back to normal and my he trots around behind me until he tires of follow the feet - and he?
