I have a funny feeling that this is all about product placement. They had to get an agreement from the manufacturer to use the sheets and then in order for the world to see the pattern he had to make it the wrong way. Either that or it is because someone has no sense of style and hasn't a clue how to make a bed so it is comfortable and looks nice.

So, now you're in bed; you lie on top of your bottom sheet. Your top sheet is on top of you all tucked under your chin. Your eyes travel down to your sheet. What do you see? I don't know about anybody else, but when I'm in bed, I like to see the pattern, not the faded side. Phooey on etiquette!!!! Gads! I'm a non-conformist!!!!!

its the same with toilet paper....put it on the roll so the sheet falls to the back, and the little duckies are upside down! the sheet must fall to the front! No one knows this but me!! (and some woman on the Opra show that pointed it out 700 years ago.)

Goodness - other people DO know how put sheets on! I have never been to a home as a guest where they were done properly.

Joyce - you don't use blankets or a comforter on top of your sheets?

Good point about the toilet paper, Kristen. Except I HAVE to put mine on backwards so the cat can't unroll it....a little trick I learned from a cat lover long ago....

I'm going to hold on to my little bit of bed making glory....if the sheets actually make it on to the teenagers beds, and then....dare I hope....the bed is MADE, it's a like a religious experience......I'm not going to spoil that by checking to see which direction the pattern is facing.....Lalalala...I can't hear you.....(fingers in my ears)

Heidi, your way is precisely how my mum taught me mumble mumble years ago. these days though i have few patterned sheets and in fact the use of an upper sheet is disappearing now with washable doona covers.. you have the bottom sheet and a covered doona.. on wash day you wash the cover and the bottom sheet.. so there's another decent god-fearing habit that will no doubt die out. ;)

Same to the hem, especially when the top hem is embellished. The wide hem is at the head and the embellishment (lace or whatever) faces down.

Gisela, sheets on a teenager's bed are usually in a heap at the bottom. Forget about tucking or directions!

Christopher, does your cat actually use the TP for its intended purpose?

Carolyn, Washable doona covers? I love the idea!

Susan, you are correct, the wide hem most definitely is up by the pillows.

Ah, to know there is order in the world. Now I can sleep at night - under my upside-down sheet!

I became aware of this fanatical piece of home decorating advice when making beds on my own, I realized that when I turn down the top sheet, to cover the top edges of the blankets on top, if the sheet isn't on upside down, the pattern overlapping the blankets looks faded (wrong side).
Even now, many years later, when I no longer even care about such things, I make the bed that way out of habit.

Kenn, I left out that very important point - the fold down over the blanket doesn't come out right if you don't put the top sheet on correctly - thanks for including it!
