wriggle wriggle, giggle giggle, slither, hum, jiggle.
"mama, how do i go to sleep?"
oh, lilliekins, there are many ways to go to sleep. they are all good ways. let's discover a few...
breathe deeply. breathe in life, spring air, goodness. breathe out slowly, and start again. let's practice. yes, it sounds like this. relax. try again. let's breathe together. yes.
think of soft cuddly sheep, arriving home after a day of playing, to rest with their mamas. they come jumping in, and when they are in their mama's loving arms, they are sung to, and they relax and fall asleep. {and i sing the old song, where will i shelter my sheep tonight, in a quiet and peaceful way} no need to hum along, just let the music carry you in its meandering river, toward the clouds of night.
think of three fairies, coming to help you sleep. the one in the velvet midnight blue dress hovers by your ear, calming you after your busy day. the other two - one in a dark dress pinpricked with tiny dots of light (just like stars) and the other in a light orange gossamer ballgown (just like the first rays of sunrise), sprinkle stars from your head to your toes. feel them? these special stars are sleeping stars, and the fairies borrowed them from the skies, to illuminate your path to your dreams.
think of the ocean, and how much she loves you. let's rest in her embrace, and just float with the waves. everyone there is quiet and sleeping - the octopus, the krill, the fish, the anemones, the eel, the rays, the jellyfish...the whales sing you their deep song. the mermaids come to embrace you, tuck your blankie tight, arrange your pillow. slowly, slowly, let the stars shine on the surface of the water and light the way to sleep.

We are similar, I find, in that this is much like what I would tell my little ones decades ago.
