Why won't they? I can't figure it out. Perhaps I can get some input on the subject.
The rules I am talking about are those pertaining to posting to Gather groups. Evey group has guidelines indicating what the group is about and what subject matter can be posted. Some groups are 'post anything' groups which allow members to post anything and everything they write. But I am referring here to groups which have a specific theme or purpose. These groups don't want just anything posted to them.
The group theme or purpose is clearly stated in the box where members click to have their work posted so there can be no excuse for posting to the wrong group. Is it a problem with reading? Or understanding? or simply caring?
If the group is for articles only, why post images and videos? If the group theme is gardening, why post recipes for apple pie? If the group calls for your single best article why post everything you write at the rate of two or three articles a day? If the group rules say 'no poetry' why bother posting poetry?
In other words why can't people read the rules and follow them? It means that all groups except the 'post anything' groups need to moderated because members can't be trusted to follow the rules. It puts quite a burden on the moderator who has to review each submission and be constantly rejecting members' willy nilly approach to posting their works.
That's my rant for the day. What do you think?

Some may well not care and just want to publish anywhere but many probably simply don't even see the instructions in the box you mentioned. I try to keep my posts in line with the purpose of the group but I've never noticed the box to which you refer. If I've not noticed it, probably many others fail also to realize the guidelines are right there.
And, I agree with Nick, there is an element of laziness involved in this phenomenon. However, there are two types of people in the world, those who are lazy and those who lie about it! All people are lazy but it shows up in different ways with different people. And laziness will never keep a responsible person from doing the things which are expected of him.
This is one of those instances I referenced in another thread of yours today, where you cannot change anyone except yourself. And there is no purpose to be gained by fighting it or worrying about it. You can't do it, accept it!
Could Gather remove points from someone who did not follow the rules? That would at least get the attention of some people who do not play by the rules. The points could not exceed what a person received via views for the articles, if the removed points went to other gather members in the group who played by the rules, it would at least even the playing field. Just a thought on one of my pet peeves as well. I think there are too many cut and paste comments on here as well, and is that against some rule? Maybe....
I guess it takes all kinds to make up the world, so I have to learn to be more accommodating to the 'clueless'.
But mostly it's because people aren't in the habit of following instructions. I was in charge of something at church where I wrote out specific instructions on what to do on a daily basis. Sometimes the groups ignored it completely, while others only partially. I bet you've had a similar experience.
The solution, of course, is to moderate all groups and require that membership be approved. If someone habitually fails to comply with the rules of posting, decline the post and remove and block the member.
