i know exactly what you mean...i am still having trouble keeping up. i just go back six articles at most to check for comments. i just don't have the time to be constantly checking. there really should be a better way so you can keep the conversations more fluid.

I think the designers of Gather are either inexperience or haven't done due diligence in studying other services of this type. If they had, the functional requirements wouldn't be so poor. Independently, the product has glaring bugs that should have been fixed before it was released.

Marsha, think of it this way. One year from now, how important will it be that you missed a thread?
You should be able to check in the History section of your browser, but I'll bet it won't work.
So you are behind, just like the rest of us.

Yes - to followup Bill's comment -

Or - "Where the &%^^$#@#@ is that witty comment I made?" - that would be the rest of us.
I think checking your own old comments is the only way.
But for all its faults, Gather is still pretty good; at least they didn't make us cut off one joint of our 4th finger, like the last group I ...uh... never mind.

LOL Yes, Bill and julian, I know. There are more important things in life than worrying about comments I may have not finished or something. I'm just used to a different format than Gather has put together so I have to learn new ways to follow up.

Gather could do what other forums do - have a "New Comments" flag come up. That way, if someone posted after you have read the page, you will know.

i hear you - we do need a flag for when someone comments back to us. argh!! i wish! it is too hard, and too many conversations get lost.

I agree about the comment above about inexperience. I don't know if you all are aware of a trend in software development called "agile methodologies" but in agile methods there is often NO functional spec and insufficient planning. Agile methods can be used quite effectively when mixed with right-sized specifications, planning, research and strategy. But some web sites take it to the extreme (after all, agile methodology is based on a software process called EXTREME PROGRAMMING). I find using software developed using XP (Extreme Programming) and Agile Methodology without proper due diligence and design to be totally frustrating. I have come close to abandoning this site SO MANY times. But I like the concept and I like the people and I like the writing. But the site itself is not my favorite part!

For a time I had problems knowing who commented on what, then in settings, I set it so everytime someone commented on a article or comment, I would receive and email saying so. But even then, belonging to so many groups makes it difficult to get around to everything.

I can't keep up either, but just do the best that I can. What else can you do? Take care.

I'm with ya. I have found often when I'm looking at through the articles of others, I often stumble upon old comments of mine. It's fun to see it the writer responded. I tend to think that nothing is ever wasted.

Me too. I like Serina's comment. heheheh...

Life is too short it is 12:27 am and I am still looking and commenting and you can only keep up with so much.

Marsha, I keep a folder where I drop articles that have ongoing conversations. It works well for me if I keep it cleaned out when the thread dies.

it ould be easier if 'comments by me' took you back to that comment where it is chronologically instead of to the article title page

All my endeavors to keep up have run amuck. I'm not losing sleep over it. Life is too short, write on.

I hear ya Marsha, like many of the others said, I do my best.... But I have no helpful tips. ;(
