I'm a conservative. I'm not Republican, I'm not Democrat.
It's true, the Republican party has long-been the party I vote for in elections. However, I've never voted straight along those party lines.
In 1980, Ronald Reagan set a new standard for conservativism. It is this standard to which I have held every candidate - Democrat and Republican - since.
In 2008 I'm faced with a dilemna.
I can't find a conservative to back wholeheartedly.
Not one of the Republicans embodies all that I embrace. Some are socially conservative, some fiscally, some strong on defense, and some strong on immigration.
But none of them has the whole package.
I turn to the Democrats, and find none of them to be conservative. In fact, I find them to be so out of touch with reality that I cannot imagine any of them to be electable. The party needs a makeover as badly as the Republicans do. Only theirs also needs to be dragged into the 21st century, kicking and screaming if necessary.
Ultimately, I think my choice will come down to Huckabee and Romney. One, too much the "every guy", and that makes me suspicious. The other, too slick, too chameleon-like..and that makes me a little frightened.
I'm not done doing my research, and since it appears my overall favorite - Sen. Thompson - is not going to mount any kind of real offensive, I'm left with a lesser of two evils kind of choice.
Sigh.....
How about you? How do you decide on a candidate? Whom do you back, and why?

BTW, How have you been feeling, what did the dr. say?
Doctor said I have ear, sinus, throat, and gland infection to go along with the bronchitis. I'm all liquored up on antibiotics, cough syrup, and decongestant. Can't go back to work till Monday, so I plan on staying in my bathrobe all weekend. I'm really weak, nauseated and dizzy (from the ear infection, no doubt), and still run a fever if I do more than walk across the room. After I went to the doc yesterday and got my meds I was so exhausted that I came home and slept all afternoon.
Being sick SUCKS! On the other hand, I like the break from work. Means more Gather time. :-)
Hope you feel better.
They're certainly not the ones who have been voting for Juan Mccain.
If that amnesty loving douchebag gets the GOP nomination i will not be voting for him in November.
It's sickening that Republicans aren't allowed to pick thier own candidate but are forced to accepted this scumbag by independents who have their tongues six inches up his old ass.
I cannot wait until the campaign gets to SC where real republicans will actually start voting in the GOP primaries. i hope they tear his f-ing heart out and make him eat it just like they did in 2000.
F%$k you mccain!
If God had meant for us to vote, he'd have given us candidates.
I never thought i'd say so but Fred and John M. looked the best in the debates to me. Sad.
