Even as some are saying that we should declare victory in the war on terror, the President reminds us all of the danger that still exists and why it is important to continue taking the fight to the enemy:
In five years since our nation was attacked, al Qaeda and terrorists it has inspired have continued to attack across the world. They've killed the innocent in Europe and Africa and the Middle East, in Central Asia and the Far East, and beyond. Most recently, they attempted to strike again in the most ambitious plot since the attacks of September the 11th -- a plan to blow up passenger planes headed for America over the Atlantic Ocean.Five years after our nation was attacked, the terrorist danger remains. We're a nation at war -- and America and her allies are fighting this war with relentless determination across the world. Together with our coalition partners, we've removed terrorist sanctuaries, disrupted their finances, killed and captured key operatives, broken up terrorist cells in America and other nations, and stopped new attacks before they're carried out. We're on the offense against the terrorists on every battlefront -- and we'll accept nothing less than complete victory. (Applause.)
In the five years since our nation was attacked, we've also learned a great deal about the enemy we face in this war. We've learned about them through videos and audio recordings, and letters and statements they've posted on websites. We've learned about them from captured enemy documents that the terrorists have never meant for us to see. Together, these documents and statements have given us clear insight into the mind of our enemies -- their ideology, their ambitions, and their strategy to defeat us.
We know what the terrorists intend to do because they've told us -- and we need to take their words seriously. . . .
According to al Qaeda, their strategy to defeat America has two parts: First, they're waging a campaign of terror across the world. They're targeting our forces abroad, hoping that the American people will grow tired of casualties and give up the fight. And they're targeting America's financial centers and economic infrastructure at home, hoping to terrorize us and cause our economy to collapse.
Bin Laden calls this his "bleed-until-bankruptcy plan." And he cited the attacks of 9/11 as evidence that such a plan can succeed. With the 9/11 attacks, Osama bin Laden says, "al Qaeda spent $500,000 on the event, while America lost -- according to the lowest estimate -- $500 billion -- meaning that every dollar of al Qaeda defeated a million dollars of America. Bin Laden concludes from this experience that "America is definitely a great power, with unbelievable military strength and a vibrant economy, but all of these have been built on a very weak and hollow foundation." He went on to say, "Therefore, it is very easy to target the flimsy base and concentrate on their weak points, and even if we're able to target one-tenth of these weak points, we will be able to crush and destroy them."
Secondly, along with this campaign of terror, the enemy has a propaganda strategy. Osama bin Laden laid out this strategy in a letter to the Taliban leader, Mullah Omar, that coalition forces uncovered in Afghanistan in 2002. In it, bin Laden says that al Qaeda intends to "launch," in his words, "a media campaign to create a wedge between the American people and their government." This media campaign, bin Laden says, will send the American people a number of messages, including "that their government will bring them more losses in finances and casualties." And he goes on to say that "they are being sacrificed to serve the big investors, especially the Jews." Bin Laden says that by delivering these messages, al Qaeda "aims at creating pressure from the American people on the American government to stop their campaign against Afghanistan."
Read the whole thing.
That last point is particularly important. There is no doubt that the terrorists are waging a media campaign in order to undermine support among America's citizens for the war in Iraq. What's surprising is just how willing many journalists/leftists are willing to go along with those efforts. We know the terrorists want to make the situation in Iraq look hopeless because, as the President points out above, they've said as much. The media complies with this by reporting nothing negativity from Iraq. They hype increases of violence even when the actual statistics coming out of Iraq show no such increase in violence at all. We hear more about bombings and insurgent activity then we do about school openings and the heroic deeds of our soldiers.
And leftist politicians, of course, point to the incessantly negative media coverage as evidence of how the Bush administration has "mishandled the war" and how we should withdraw our soldiers from Iraq.
Are these journalists and politicians working in cahoots with the terrorists? Of course not. The idea is absurd. The journalists are simply trying to sell papers and increase viewership while the Democrats are just trying to exploit an issue to get themselves elected. Which is all well and good as far as that goes, but it would be helpful if these people also remembered that their actions and words - unwittingly as it may be - play directly into the hands of our enemies.

Then we most certainly should have him. Bush said that he was going to get him "dead or alive," didn't he?
Seems like the war in Iraq Is playing right into their hands. Some kid gets paid $50 and given a $ 50 rocket lancher and destroyes a $200000 Humm-vee or a 5 million dollar tank. I think Bush is playing right into their hands.
They already are destroying our way of life. Our freedoms are eroding by the day. Oh wait. Thats the Republicans. They're really blessing us.
Number 1 - over 50% of the active duty army that is in Iraq and Afghanistan are RESERVISTS AND NATIONAL GUARD. Why is this a problem. Look at Katrina when we couldn't even help our own American people. What happens economically when you pull these soldiers out of their civilian jobs and they become full-time soldiers. Those small businesses take a hit economically because by law the employer must hold that job 3 years. Lets consider in my own personal case that my husband was depolyed first time 7 months (IRAQ) and then a year later for 18 months (AFGHANISTAN) "we" have served in both campaigns. For reservist and national guard the military offers no programs to soldiers families that do not live on a base. I have no tax free shopping, no PX or Commissary to go to and no emergency child care services. I paid out of pocket for doctors as Tri Care doesn't cover 100% like it does on a base. Basically these families are left out here to blow in the wind. They do not know the military lingo or how to navigate the red tape as they consider themselves civilians. Many states like North Carolina are picking up the tab and ultimatly sending our taxes up to fill in the holes with the Citizen Soldier Support Program. Many of the reserve/guard military families take pay cuts, if you didn't live near family you were SCREWED! You suddenly become a single parent and are left holding all the responsibility. Care packages cost on average between $50 and $100 between postage and contents.
Number 2 Lets talk IED's and those killed who the government is paying a $450,000 death benefit to the widow (that is a one time payment) Even if we made it a generous salary of 50,000 per year that means that a wife has 9 years tops without that second income that the family is use too. They do not insure soldiers that is why the government does it and that is the maximum death benefit up from 250,000 when he was in Iraq. The widow is eligible for social security for the children and hell our retirees can't survive on that. For those soldiers that don't die but are seriously wounded lets talk about the lack of care that the VA Medical center gives our veterans. In my case it took two years to get my husband's injury fixed from Iraq just in time to be deployed to Afghanistan. THe VA Medical system is not prepared for the overload of new veterans. Think coverage for the rest of their lives that is quite a tab Mr. Bush is racking up. The president you so highly praise had cuts in the works until the liberal media that you slammed exposed the conditions at Walter Reed.
Number 3 - In 2003-2004 General Hemsley wrote a very public letter letting the powers that be know that the reserves were Broken he retired within a year. That they could not continue the pase so in response GATES changed the COTAD requirements. For general reference this is the crap currently in the media saying guard/reserve will now only be deployed for 12 months. SOUNDS REALLY GOOD however it is BS! Guard and reserve under the old COTAD were only eligible to serve 2 years total out of 5 in any give campaign. That all changed. The new COTAD states that soldiers are deployable unless the have served 24 consecutive months in country. So all of us who have done our part and though we were DONE for five years at least! ARE ALL NOW REDEPLOYABLE! What is the cost here you may ask! Well soldiers who have served multiple deployemnts, are SSG, SFC, SGT are getting out. When the government changes the rules COTAD and STOPLOSS! The cost is american's lives those snot nose 18-21 year olds that old timers like mine keep alive. These soldiers are not reenlisting.
Number 4 - How would you like to know that the reserve unit we are with has had no equipment to train on for a year as it is still not back. That means we have been paying soldiers to run PT everyweekend because they have had no equipment to train on. Cost is equipment that is not been replaced. Exuipment that is worn out and left in equipment grave yards. The ARMY does not have the money or the personnel to combat the problem.
Number 5 the cost of this WAR has only been felt by military families. My personal cost was 4 of the guys I came to love because of taking care of them and their families didn't come home. That is a cost that is insurmountable. If you think that this situation is worth fighting for put yourself and your family throug it!
But, you don't want to be asking yourself how many "innocent in Europe and Africa and the Middle East, in Central Asia and the Far East, and beyond" we have killed since we are saying that's what terrorists do. And, we don't want to be remembering that the reporters who are allowed to report on the situation in Iraq sign an agreement to only print what our government let's them print since we are blaming it on Bin Laden that, as Rob puts it, "We know the terrorists want to make the situation in Iraq look hopeless because, as the President points out above, they've said as much. The media complies with this by reporting nothing negativity from Iraq."
I actually had the same thoughts as Tammy expressed earlier today before I came on Gather, which was, if Bush is so convinced that our young people (and some not so young) need to sacrifice their lives to bring peace, why isn't he shipping out soon?
