Pulitzer-Winning Author John Updike Dies at Age 76

January 28, 2009, 2:56pm: John Updike, one of American's most prolific modern writers, lost a battle with lung cancer this morning, according to Nicholas Latimer of Alfred A. Knopf, a division of Random House. Updike, a Harvard graduate who won the Pulitzer in 1981 for his novel Rabbit is Rich, and again in 1991 for Rabbit at Rest, was 76.

One of my favorite Updike quotes, "I seem most instinctively to believe in the human value of creative writing, whether in the form of verse or fiction, as a mode of truth-telling, self-expression and homage to the twin miracles of creation and consciousness."
