Last year, while Mom was dying here, me abandoned and alone, I asked my doctor for Prozac. KNOWING it was a 'patch' not a fix I picked up this book and studied it off and on. I can say it helped me. I recently put it in my eBay store to pass along to someone else.
The Prozac made that horror story endurable, but I was glad a couple weeks after sending Mom out to sea on Christmas Eve in St. Augustine to quit it cold turkey.
This book has a wonderful 'take' on depression, not usually found in my other reading, it outlines steps YOU can take to reduce and rid yourself of negative thoughts, bad emotional habits, and depression.
Like anything, a job like this is a work in progress.
Publishers notes:
...Information about Feeling Good by Aaron T. Beck, David D. Burns M.D. (1980)
Synopsis
Antidepressants are a miracle, but to really beat depression we need to change our whole way of thinking. This book is a great introduction to a process--known as cognitive therapy--that can help us do just that. According to David M. Burns, depression results from a process wherein negative thoughts produce distortions of reality. Through a careful monitoring of thoughts, this depression-producing distortion is avoidable. One can also learn to distinguish reality from its depression-fueled distortions, and cut the downward spiral short. Burns offers a system of prevention, self control, and understanding, making possible what he refers to as "rapid symptomatic improvement."
Publisher's Note
Reveals how depression can be regulated by developing self-esteem, changing the habits of pessimistic thinking, and becoming aware of distorted perceptions that bring on mood changes.
