This historical mystery novel is an absolute must read. Author Caro Peacock mixes suspense, intrigue, adventure and deceit, brings her plot to a boil and serves up an extraordinary story that will hook and hold readers from first page to last.
This Victorian era novel is not your standard gothic tale, nor is it a bodice ripper. A Foreign Affair features a strong, independent young heroine who leaves no stone unturned to uncover the truth about her father's death. Young Liberty Lane treads fearlessly into the midst of treasonous plotters who seek to prevent Queen Victoria from ruling England.
Caro Peacock entices the reader with tiny bits of clues that create even more doubts and questions. Peacock is a master of subterfuge. Her plot keeps the reader constantly off balance and fascinated. Liberty is never certain of who to trust, but her instincts prove reliable.
A Foreign Affair is a high-speed read. Compelled to know the truth, I read to the end, then regretted the loss of Liberty's company. According to the author, however, A Foreign Affair is only the first of a series featuring Liberty Lane.
Although the title and description suggest a historical romance, A Foreign Affair is a much more substantial story with an unconventional, likable heroine. I look forward to sharing Liberty's next adventure.
