Dear Gather Friends:
The following are markets from Cynthia Sterling's Marketing Newsletter. Since I can't post as often as I'd like, you may want to sign up for her newsletter (the link is in the article below) if you'd like to receive more timely updates. Although her newsletter deals with many romance markets, as you can see, she covers quite a few others as well.
Hope you find this useful,
My Best,
Kathryne
(My disclaimer: I cannot vouch for any of the markets listed...just passing the info along.:})
I'm going to begin this week's newsletter with a look at two good markets for both short and long works of science fiction and fantasy. First is Orson Scott Card's Intergalactic Medicine Show (http://www.intergal acticmedicinesho w.com) This beautiful quarterly publication is interested in all types of science fiction and fantasy, including "hard sf, sf adventure, alternate history, near-future, far-future, psi, alien, and any other kind of sf you can think of. "Fantasy" includes heroic fantasy (based on any culture's mythology), fairy tales, contemporary fantasy, and "horror" in the sense of supernatural suspense (not gory bloodfests, thanks)." They pay 6 cents a word for the first 7500 words and 5 cents a word thereafter. The word limit is pretty wide open, since this is an online publication. Submissions should be made through the submission form on the website. ************ ********* ********* ********* ********* **Jim Baen's Universe (http://www.baensuni verse.com) is another beautiful online publication, this one bi-monthly. The publication recently re-opened to submissions. Editors are looking for all kinds of science fiction and fantasy stories, or various lengths. At least two slots per issue are dedicated to new writers. They have a complicated pay structure, ranging from 6 cents a word for new writers, to 8 to 15 cents a word for slush pile manuscripts from more established writers, to 25 cents a word for commissioned works. In addition, they pay royalties if the magazine reprints the story in paper and some other circumstances detailed in their guidelines. Length is wide open here, from short stories to novellas. They have a lot to say about the length debate in their guidelines as well, so do check them out. ************ ********* ********* ********* ********* ***Light Sword Publishing (http://www.lightswo rdpublishing. com/index. html) is a small press that publishes romance (contemporary, historical, romantic suspense and paranormal), children's books, suspense, thriller, fantasy, mystery and science fiction books and some nonfiction. Begun by author Linda Daly and Bonny Kirby, Light Sword published trade paper editions. Authors should query first. Submission guidelines are available on the web site. ************ ********* ********* ********* ********* **Stephanie Lane has been promoted to senior editor at Delacorte Children's ************ ********* ********* ********* ******** Check out the cover for my November Blaze, Wild Child, at http://tinyurl. com/37xtuy************ ********* ********* ********* ********* Feel free to pass along this newsletter and to encourage others to sign up to receive it. If you reprint or forward the newsletter, all I ask is that I be given credit for it. Anyone can sign up by sending a blank email to cynthiasterling- subscribe@ yahoogroups. com Cindi Myers

Midnight Showcase (http://www.midnight showcase. com) is an ebook publisher that offers a wide variety of genre fiction, from westerns and mysteries to paranormal, including historical and contemporary and erotic romance. They publish short stories, novels, and complete novels available for download. They are open to submissions. Guidelines are available on the website.************ ********* ********* ********* ********* ***Broken Pencil is a Canadian alternative magazine that publishes three times a year. The editors are interested in short fiction from 50 to 3000 words. Payment is from $30 to $300 "depending on our finances." For more information, see their guidelines at http://www.brokenpe ncil.com/ about/submit. php ************ ********* ********* ********* ********* **Double Dragon Publishing bills itself as "The world's biggest independent publisher of science fiction and fantasy e-books." Double Dragon is currently accepting science fiction, fantasy and romance manuscripts. Starting September 1, 2007, Double Dragon will be accepting "literary erotica" for a new imprint, Carnal Desires. Carnal Desires "will offer works of literary erotica targeting mature, sophisticated, uninhibited readers who frankly enjoy character-driven erotic romance novels featuring explicit sensual scenes. We will offer each work of erotic fiction as an ebook, and, if the author so wishes, as a paperback. When we open for submissions on September 1, 2007, we will be looking for erotic novels that feature both high literary quality and supremely original story lines. Not only must vivid portrayals of sexual encounters be integral to a riveting plot featuring fascinating, well-developed characters, erotic scenes must form an essential aspect of the plot. So must romance. We will not consider work we deem pornographic: writing confined to a pointless succession of graphic portrayals of steamy sex intended solely to initiate arousal. Our offerings will engage the minds and the hearts of our readers!" Detailed submission guidelines are available at http://www.double- dragon-ebooks. com/guidelines. phpElectric Spec is an online magazine that publishes "shocking good short works of science fiction, fantasy and the macabre. They are now accepting submissions for their fall issue. Stories should be between 250 and 7000 words. Payment is $20. For more, see their guidelines at http://www.electric spec.com/ Submissions. html ************ ********* ********* ********* ********* *****Capper's (http://www.cappers. com) is a bi-weekly tabloid distributed primarily in the midwestern United States. Each year they buy four to six longer stories (12,000 - 25,000 words) and publish them in seriel form. The emphasis is on home and family, and stories should have no profanity, violence, sex or alcohol use. Payment is $75 - $300 and Capper's retains rights for one year. For more information, see the guidelines on their website.
