a reprise/life memory/recollection of the first time hearing of the song…
trouble no more.

"Dont care how long you go,
I dont care how long you stay,
Its good kind treatment,
Bring you home someday.
Someday baby, you aint gonna trouble,
Poor me, anymore."
The year was nineteen-sixty eight.
It was what passed for winter at home.
Fall, Christmastime maybe.
My best buddy and neighbor Phyfe and I got on our bikes to ride eight or ten miles
on a Sunday afternoon to hear some music.
"Now you keep on bettin,
That the dice wont pass.
Well I know, and I know,
Whoa, oh youre livin too fast.
Someday baby, you aint gonna trouble,
Poor me, anymore."
I'd had a 'Doctor feelgood' prescription the two years before
for a type of buffered amphetamine, at thirteen or fourteen...
We'd split a tablet, walk ten miles to town eating chewing gum on the way.
If you chew that shit long enough it simply disappears, but that was all gone now.
"Yeah, Ill tell everybody,
In my neighborhood.
Youre a kind little woman,
But you dont do me no good.
But someday baby, you aint gonna trouble,
Poor me, anymore."
… up Riverside, listening to the Manatee blow and the porpoise cutting water in the shallows hunting,
Over the bridge, past the toll takers booth where he'd yell "HEY! that's ten cents!"
and we'd go like hell down the other side.. but he'd never stir from his black and white teevee.
"I know youre leaving,
If you call that gone.
Someday baby, you aint gonna trouble,
Poor me, anymore."
...Up Peninsula Drive past the snowbird houses with semi-retirees even then,
no older than I am now, glued to the flickering gohd boxes while life went on outside.
To that nice house on dunetop west, basement created by building up, not down.
to Hear Duane Yell at Gregg 'stay on the beat damnit!' and Butch look disgusted.
"Well good bye baby,
Yeah well take my hand.
I don't want no woman no, who can't have no man.
But someday baby, you ain't gonna trouble,
Poor me, anymore, trouble no more.
Oh yeah... yeah babe."
But someday baby, you ain't gonna trouble,
Poor me, anymore. trouble no more.
Oh yeah... babe.
