Gardening question: Mums

So, I have the two huge mum bushes in the yard that are in bloom. They are so leggy and are flopping over on top of all the other stuff in the garden bed now and I am thinking I've failed at the pruning aspect of their care.

Fellow gardeners, I need some mum care tips. How and when are they pruned? Is there a way to cut them back so that they grow more compact and bush like for next season?

Please share your tips guys. I've never grown these before.

I cut mine all the way down. It's hard to kill a mum. Don't be afraid to cut them back. During growing season try to remove as much dead leaves and flowers, but at the end of the season cut them back. I had a gigantic one, but all of a sudden it fell over and died. It had no roots. But it was a beauty for about four years. Good luck.
