My parents and grandparents introduced me to gardening here and there when I was younger, After buying my father's house I've slowly been turning more and more lawn into gardens. If any of you love gardening you know that gardening isn't a hobby, it is an obsession!!! I have plenty of standard gardens, and some more creative ones. I garden by color, flower type, and pretty much whatever my idea is of the day. I'm not afraid of difficult or finicky plants. If the live they live, if they are unhappy I gladly move them to a spot they may like better. I have 3 dogs, one in particular who is 110lbs who loves to lay against the foundation. Upon laying down she has taken out numerous lillies, snaping them off at ground level. They have chewed rose bushes, thorns and all, to the ground. Even used tomatoes as tennis balls. So here's my idea of the day, I've decided to create a garden with a gothic theme. My problem is I don't know where to start. I have an idea for the shape and I've done some research on what flowers will work well, but I need some suggestions. I need animal friendly plants, so foxglove is out!! Any suggestion, advice, or experiences would be greatly appreciated!!! The location of the garden will have just about all light variations, and I'm going to need all different heights to create the look I'm going for. I live in central CT so I'm in zone 6ish. I've had plants that should come back that don't, and plants that shouldn't come back survive New England winters. I'm looking for exotic flowers along with the good ol' standards. Thanks in advance for any help.

You definately sound as though you've been bitten by the gardening bug. ;) I've no suggestions right now for your Gothic theme but I'm sure someone will . :) And I'd love to see photos of your gardens they sound beautiful. :)
Thank you for joining and posting to Gather Gardens!
Spider lillies for sure
No suggestions here, either, but I had to laugh when I read about your "obssesion" and digging up more and more of your yard. One of these days I won't have a yard at all, just one huge garden.
I think the only way you will find what works is just to experiment until it does.
There are several Elephant ears that would go in it nicely believe one is called black magic will look up tonight some are huge some only a dfoot or 2 high
Also several daylilies and Cannas Being Goth it would be great for Red roses I recomend Knock out roses it is a great blooming rose very caefree.
I nam replaceing slowly the grass with ground covers and Herbs! rosemary would stand out in your garden as well
thanks for posting to clasic palms
[plant care from 9 to 5)
