I thought I would take pictures of our garden today. I like to be able to look back from year to year and see how big/small everything was on what date. So I thought I would share with y'all. :) I'm hoping now that the cold weather SHOULD be gone that everything will take off and get bigger. The cold snaps we had a few nights stopped growth on a few things. We didn't loose much, maybe a tomato plant or two but I had plenty of backups to replace them with. I got kinda seed happy this winter when I started them.

wow, I'm jealous! it looks great! We just planted ours over the weekend so nothing is up yet!
Thanks Bridget! I'm glad everything is still growing here we had a couple days that went down into the 30's. I sure was hoping I didn't loose the lot.
I can't wait to see your pictures of yours too! :)
I WANT RHUBARB.
LOL Shannon...no where to plant one in the corner of your yard? ;)
Yes, but not the patience to wait a year or two to harvest it :(
Well plant some this year and buy some this year...I bet by next year you'll have some :) If not you'll for sure have them the next year...and then you'll have your own.
Where will you be in 2 years if you don't plant them this year? ;)
LOL now I'm sounding like a 'Mom' Like when I tell my kids about going back to school. If you whine for 2/4 years about how long it will take to get a degree and do nothing about it you'll still have nothing in 2/4 years. But if you go to school...in that 2/4 time period that you would of been just whining about not having a degree you could have one.
....heh...Mom mode off.....LOL
I know. But we did break down and buy some from the farmer's market ;)
I think I need to harvest some of mine this weekend. ;) If I had more than the one plant I'd surely send you a bundle...but I've just got me the one....and I'm being stingy..LOL ;)
Everything looks very nice.
Thank you Kelly!
We aren't having much luck this year. Larry planted tomatoes and basil in our side yard. Between our huge tree out back and the privacy fence we lost all our sun in the backyard. We are now thinking that the neighbors treated their lawn with something that leached into our ground. Once Larry gets a job we hope to crop the tree. Maybe we will have better luck next year. Yours looks great.
Thank you Patti! Geez that's too bad about your plants. Maybe try container gardening a couple plants? That way you could move them into the sun. :)
nice
Thank you Larry! :)
Nice garden.
Thank you Winona! :)
You gardens' looking great! You have such a great variety, I'm envious of your space and super jealous of your raspberries! :-P
I discovered that mint will grow in the shade so I planted some in one of my shade beds we'll see what happens.
We have baby tomatoes and baby cukes already and I'm going to have to harvest the garlic early ~ too much rain here. I'd love to have rubarb too, but its too hot her for rubarb to grow.
Thank you Moggy. :) There are a couple more herbs...but they are struggling. ;) The red rasperries are looking good too! Those do not have any flowers yet.
Be careful of the mint ...it is really invasive. I have peppermint and spearmint growing everywhere!
Now I'm jealous! You already have veggies! And I am really really jealous over your garlic. Mine never did anything. I threw some more in the ground when we were still getting frosts...but something stole all them but 3! Those are coming up but I'm almost sure they'll not do anything. I'm going to try a different location this year.
I am shocked our rhubarb came back. Slugs ate it down to the ground last year. This is the first time I've ever tried growing it. It seems to be doing good. Not too red though. I think the sun does that and it's not in an awful sunny spot.
You have a wonderful garden.
Thank you! :)
You have a wonderful variety, and everything looks great. Best of luck with that terrific garden!
Thank you so much Katie! I'd still love to have a couple peach trees like yours! :)
A whole bunch of items ready to harvest! Your sweet basil looks great. I started three from nursery starts and they look awful. Just about three tiny little leaves on each plant that appear to be struggling. Oh how I long for those sweet basil leaves in a spinach salad along with fresh mozzarella balls and balsamic vinegrette....
This is my second attempt Ms. Meacham. ;) Actually third. Once from seed....diaster..lol Second fromt the nursery planted directly in my herb garden....something dined on it and there is only a couple little holey leaves left.(I hope the bug chocked on it..lol) This last one I bought and planted it in a pot it's doing great! *crosses fingers* lol
Your salad description sounds so yummy!
Thanks for the backstory Kim. Most nurseries will allow you to take your plants back, so I may do just that -- and get the fully grown plants this time. Here's looking for that salad some day very soon. ; )
P.S. Thank you so much for submitting this post to the Frugal Eats group here on Gather. This post is now featured!
Thank you so much for the feature! :)
I'm impressed by the vast variety of veggies you have! (And by my alliteration!)
We've really pared things down this year. We'll always have rhubarb (had a pie this past weekend!), raspberries, garlic, sage and mint. I think the only other herbs Kevin planted this year were rosemary, basil and tarragon. I loves me some tarragon!
As far as veggies go, we've got tomatoes, beans, cukes and peppers. The rest of the garden has been turned over to the flowers. That's more my area of expertise!
Thank you! Was going to an alliteration back......guess I'm too tired...as you'll see with what I thought your pie was made of. ;)
LOL I read your post a bit too fast and was wondering what a rhubarb, raspberry, garlic, sage and mint pie tasted like. I thought well to each there own...LOL I've never tried tarragon before in the garden. Rosemary never lives from year to year here so I just buy one huge plant each year. :)
I'm by no means an expert on veggies or flowers. I plant em and cross my fingers. Cuss when they die and replant more and cross my fingers again..lol
Tarragon is really easy to grow but I haven't found much call for it in traditional recipes. I usually just end up drying it, packing it away in spice bottles, and adding to to pasta sauce.
Tarragon on pork is the ultimate taste sensation! I add it to roasts, chops and even sausage. The flavors are very complimentary.
Maybe I'll have to look into finding some tarragon for the garden. I don't think I even have any of it in my dried spices. I'll have to look into it. ;)
My partner was just telling me about a cooking show that recommended tarragon for cream-based salads, like chicken salad for sandwiches and picnic favorites like slaw, potato or pasta salads. As such, I added a bunch of fresh tarragon (not diced and just stripped from the stem just with my fingers) to a potato salad base of mayo, champagne mustard, green olives with pimentos, diced garlic-spiced bread & butter pickles, paprika, sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper and IT WAS DIVINE.
So, in an ode to Ina's alliteration, I'll give you this: "'Tis tarragon that makes yummy-to-my-tummy salads taste tremendous...."
[Exception: Tarragon has a slight black licorice taste, so if you don't like black licorice this may not float your boat.]
That sounds exquisite! I've made a note to try it.
I dislike black licorice tremendously and have never noticed the similarity in flavor. Perhaps this is a problem if it's used in excess?
Making me hungry! I would LOVE a salad with beet greens about now!
You know I've never eatten the greens before. Just the beat part. I think I'll try them this year. Any hints on how to properly make them?
We mix them with other young greens for a salad mix.
That sounds good! I love salads. I'll give that a try. Thanks. :)
Wow, it looks like your garden is doing great!
Thank you Janet. I'm hoping it really starts to take off. I'm ready to harvest! LOL
Looks like it's coming along nicely. All this rain should help.
Thanks Marianne! It' been raining all day and they are calling for it for the next few days. Plus it's supposed to get warmer out (in the 70's) so that should be good for it. :)
WOW...you have a heap of good eaten there when it all comes up...
Sure will! I can't wait for it. :)
You have a very big garden. The basil looks great and the rosemary is very healthy. Your broccoli and brussel sprouts seem to be about the same size as mine. Nice shots.
Thank you! I'd like to have a bigger garden but we rent and I'm not sure he'd like me making the whole backyard into a garden. lol
I'm glad the broccoli is finally growing a bit. It was pretty spindley for a while.
Oh, I'm so envious! I have two back yards (long story) but we get so little sun between March and the end of July....veggie gardening is not really suitable. (sigh)
You have two backyards and still no sun? ;) I'd have to get me a cart with wheels and container garden and wheel it around to where the sun was! lol ;)
Super photo essay, Kim . All shots are great ,but the basil is so glossy and green.
Thank you Phil! The basil is doing really well this time around. *knocks on wood* ;)
Beautiful photos of all the new plants, love all the green. You're going to be eating good this summer.
Thanks so much for posting to my group.
Thank you Nana! :) I can't wait til I can start harvesting. :)
Your garden and photos warranted another look ,great !
oops I missed this. Thank you for looking again. ;)
It all looks great. You're going to have a wonderful harvest. I wish I had planted some lemon balm. I love the scent.
I missed this one also..sorry. ;) Our lemon balm comes up every year. Planted it once. ;) I planted a few new little ones in a different area. It's not growing but not dying either! lol Rub it sometime and smell it...I love it too...but doesn't it smell like Pledge? lol
Hey Kim;
How are your beans doing now in July? Have you discovered it is easy to miss a few when you harvest? I found Purple Pod Beans (available only thru Gurney's) a few years ago & they are extremely easy to find on the plants. They turn green when cooked & aren't stringy. They can be eaten raw, too, according to my husband & our cat who both like them right off the plant. We put up a line of wire fencing for the plants to train on so there isn't so much bending to pick.
Hi Nancy! Nice seeing you again. :) My poor beans. Something kept eating all the tender new leaves off it leaving just stems. I replanted a couple times. I have double the amount of bean plants planted than what you see up top. I have 2 beans! lol But a lot of flowers so I'm hoping soon I'll have a nice little harvest. :) And to answer your question...yep...I have to keep flipping the plants back and forth to make sure I don't miss the beans. Those purple ones sound like the way to go to be able to find them. I do like the bush ones that we plant here as they don't vine and I can keep them all confined into a small area. I might have to try those though. :)
Hi, KIm;
Your uninvited dinner guests could be either/both ants or leafhoppers which are very minature grasshoppers. Get a good granular bug dust product & cover the ground around your vegetables as well as whatever you are using as a bug killing spray. I've always thought if the bugs won't help with the planting, weeding, harvesting, & canning of the vegetables they should stay out of my garden!
Good luck with the remaining beans, etc.
